Applied Hermeneutics of Continuity

Regarding the intrinsic juridical nature of Holy Matrimony, in the beautiful speech of the Holy Father to the auditors of the Roman Rota (text in Italian).

The entire attitude of the Church and of the faithful in the field of family [affairs] must be based on this truth about marriage and its intrisic juridical dimension. Nonetheless, as I recalled previously, the relativist mentality, in a more or less open or subtle way, may insinuate itself even within the ecclesial community. You are well aware of the currentness of this risk, which manifests itself at times in a distorted interpretation of the canonical norms in force.

It is necessary to react to this trend with courage and confidence, constantly applying the hermeneutics of renewal in continuity and not letting oneself to be attracted by interpretive ways which imply a rupture with the Tradition of the Church. These ways move away from the true essence of matrimony as well as from its intrinsic juridical dimension and, under various more or less attractive names, seek to dissimulate a forgery of conjugal reality.

The Pope is standing up for the indissoluabilty of marriage and elsewhere for heterosexual marriage: it is a sad state of affairs when such affirmations are noteworthy.

Speaking of the juridical dimension of the family, wouldn't it really be something, and create a furor greater than Regensburg, if he were to reaffirm the patriarchal hierarchy of the family, both in the duties of manly headship and wifely submission. But of couse this, which is a mere reiteration of the Catechism of Trent, is beyond anyone's wildest dreams: indeed no prelate (save those of the irregular SSPX) would dare breath such prophetic countercultural words. Such is the state of an emasculated Catholicism.

Pope Benedict XVI is already worthy of the highest acolades from all believers in authentic worship of God with the restoration of the Tridentine Latin Mass! His model is St. Charles Borremeo who brought order to the disordered after the Council of Trent. Now Benedict XVI is doing the same after the Second Vatican Council, only our problems are mountainous within the Church compared to tridentine times. Then they were beyond the Church with the Reformation. There is a cataclysmic split in the continuity of our worship from Vatican II versus the Council of Trent. There is likewise a huge fissure in sacramental theology, especially marriage with all of the "catholic divorce." Alter the nature of prayer life from 'propitiatory' to 'impetratory' worship and you have chaos. How have we done this?

I saw an article recently which from the Vatican document on the ancient Assyrian liturgy implied that the Church now believes the words of consecration are not required for Eucharistic validity.

I think this is a great example of how the hermeneutics of discontinuity operate. Something is taken that is a 75 percent truth in order to conclude something that is a 25 percent truth.

The whole language and logic of the actual document are set aside in order to present a meaning which perverts it to the foundation.

My prayer is that we will all see to read all the Church's teaching - yesterday, today and tomorrow - as a seamless whole and undivided body. I hope we all constantly ask ourselves, what would I have to believe in order to see continuity? How would that work?
