I am deeply saddened by this. I wrote to his eminence many years ago asking his prayers for my vocation. He kindly wrote me a note and assured me of his prayers.
Herr, gib ihm die ewige Ruhe." "Und das ewige Licht leuchte ihm"
This is a very sad day. I, for one, regard Cardinal Mayer as 'the last traditionalist cardinal'. He has been a very strong support to our entire movement, as were other traditionalist cardinals, such as Stickler, Palazzini, and Oddi.
Pray earnestly for the soul of this great man. He would have turned 99 next month, and Stickler lived to be 97. Both were the oldest living cardinals when they died. I thank God that both lived to see "Summorum Pontificum" published.
Of all the Cardinals,Tonini has been alive (born 1914) and a priest(ordained 1937) the longest, and Korec (a Czech "catacomb bishop" of 1951) and Angelini (consecrated by Pizzardo in 1956) have been bishop the longest.

One of the best Cardinals in the Church.
Maybe this is kinda wrong...but why couldn't it have been Re or Sodano instead. (Just kidding).
I'm sure he heard "Well done, good and faithful servant!" when he met Our Lord.
His Eminence will be greatly missed by many.

May His Eminence be welcomed by flights of angels as he enters the Heavenly Jerusalem to enjoy the Beatific Vision.
Eternal rest Cardinal Mayer.

So, who is now the oldest cardinal? Anyone?

Ersilio Cardinal Tonini (b. 1914)
I would be a most touching and kind charity, if the Holy Father offered a public TLM for the funeral of this greast Cardinal.
It would be an excellent occasion and a teaching moment for the entire hierarchy, world wide!

" why couldn't it have been Re or Sodano instead."
I can assure you, Almighty God has not finished with him yet. His moment will come.
