Rio de Janeiro: Conference on Summorum Pontificum for Priests and Solemn Pontifical Mass

The "Second Summorum Pontificum Priestly Meeting" organized by the Coetus Sacerdotalis Summorum Pontificum, and promoted by both the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro and the Apostolic Administration of St. John Vianney in Campos, was held in Rio de Janeiro from November 15 to 18, 2011. (The first meeting took place in 2010, as reported by Rorate at the time.)

The meeting opened on the evening of November 15 with a "Prelatical Mass" by Bishop Fernando Areas Rifan, followed by dinner. The 16th and 17th saw a series of talks on topics such as the theological aspect of the liturgy (given by Bishop Rifan), liturgical practice, Summorum Pontificum and Universae Ecclesiae in the light of canon law, Gregorian chant, the relationship between Summorum Pontificum and the Reform of the Reform, and the mystagogy of the Traditional Latin Mass.

Rorate has been informed that in the course of the conference, a Mass according to the Old Carmelite Rite was said by the prior of the Brazilian Traditional Carmelites.

The climax of the whole conference was the Solemn Pontifical Mass offered on November 17, at six in the evening, by Bishop Rifan in the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Rio de Janeiro's old Cathedral and once the chapel of the Brazilian imperial family. (This church was featured last year by Rorate.) Salvem e Liturgia has a photo gallery of the Pontifical Mass. Another photo gallery can be found on Facebook, while short videos can be found on the Facebook page dedicated to the TLM in Rio de Janeiro.

The Solemn Pontifical Mass was attended in choro by three bishops, including Archbishop Orani Joao Tempesta, Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro. Rorate has been informed that more than 50 priests attended the Mass.

Marcus, you can post that, especially if you can prove it, but not using the 'Anonymous' identity.

NC, the date 2008 is a typo, should read 2011.

This pontifical Mass in Rio de Janeiro is very important. Brazil has millions of Catholics, and this Mass was attended by a large number of priests that will hopefully spread Catholic tradition further. Beautiful pictures at the Brazilian link. Muitas gratias.

Ok, just keep in mind that this sort of event was in fact an attempt to "adjust" the minds of the attendees into the Reform of the Reform mentality. It should be said that it was not an event to simply promote the Old Rite or the Extraordinary Form of the Roman rite as they like to say and that the word order was "mutual enrichment", that is to say, learn about the old rite to better celebrate the novus ordo Mass.

It is equally important to mention that according to this thinking, Novus Ordo was celebrated during the event, which is now greatly acceptable to the Apostolic Administration Bishop, who mentions that the New Mass is just one among the various approved rites of the Church. Nothing negative is said about the Novus Ordo, its weaknesses are completely ommitted, as opposed to his speech two decades ago.

He emphasizes that in order to show "full communion" with the Roman Pontiff it is necessary to concelebrate the New Mass.

My concern is that this sort of event in the future becomes a weapon of surveillance instead of a tool to instruct new priests in the old rite.

Besides, among these alleged 40 priests (the pictures of the public mass show no more than 28), how many were in fact new to the rite, going there "to learn" the old rite?

My concern is that instead of encouraging priests to just FOLLOW AND TRUST THE MOTU PROPRIO SUMMORUM PONTIFICUM, providing them with knowledge and expertise, they end up creating a kind of national body to intermediate and watch all those priests who wish to learn and celebrate the Mass of All Times.

http:Dear New Catholic, the proof is here in this video of bishop Rifan: http://youtu.be/v4-T51dy9bk

He says that they concelebrated the new mass and. And this same video, Bishop Rifen says that and old bishop, Dom Karl Romer, who in the 80's tried to convince the "Fathers of Campos" of their error regarding Vatican II and the New Mass was in the conferece talking about the "true spirit of Vatican II"...

Reporter: What do you highlight as the main thing that happened throughout these days here in Sumare during this conference?

Translation from 3:03 to 3:15

"... we had training, training workshops, there was a Solemn Mass, we also had a Solemn Pontifical Mass, Mass in the ORDINARY FORM and in the Extraordinary Form. Therefore, all together a liturgical wealth that was presented to our priests."

Ordinary Form = Liturgical Wealth??? No, thanks!

That doesn't surprise me at all! Here's a video of Bishop Rifan concelebrating the New Mass just a few months ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOfr2-q6ARc
