Event: Bishop Athanasius Schneider in New York and Connecticut

The Society of St. Hugh of Cluny is sponsoring a visit of Bishop Athanasius Schneider to New York and Connecticut over the Feast of the Epiphany. Bishop Schneider is currently Auxiliary Bishop of Astana, Kazakhstan, and the author of Dominus Est, a celebrated defense of the traditional manner of receiving Holy Communion.

While more details may be made available as we get closer to the date, the main events are as follows:

  • -Saturday, January 5th at 2:00pm: Pontifical Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. James, 240 Jay Street, Brooklyn, New York. Afterwards, Bishop Schneider will give a lecture on “Holy Communion and the Renewal of the Church.”
  • -Sunday, January 6th at 9:30am: Pontifical Mass at the Throne at St. Mary's Church, 669 West Avenue, Norwalk, Connecticut. A light reception in the parish hall will follow.
  • -Sunday, January 6th at 5:00pm: Pontifical Vespers at the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer, 173 East 3rd Street, New York City.

Music for all liturgies — to include works by Ockeghem, Clemens non Papa, Palestrina, Parsons, Victoria, and Philips — will be sung by the Schola Cantorum of St. Mary's Church under the direction of David J. Hughes. At the Mass in Brooklyn, the Schola Cantorum will be joined by the St. Mary's Student Schola, an ensemble of children aged 5-18 devoted to the study of Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony in the context of the traditional Latin liturgy.
