1. As we had first mentioned here last May, Pope Benedict XVI officially announced today that Saint John of Avila, confessor, is to be proclaimed Doctor of the Church shortly.
2. The Juventutem feed is still the first item in our sidebar: the Missa Cantata for the young Traditional-minded Catholics in WYD was celebrated today by the Juventutem chaplain, Fr. A. de Malleray, FSSP, in the parish church of Saint Francis de Sales (San Francisco de Sales).
The evening and night hours of the Divine Office will be publicly prayed tonight by the Juventutem pilgrims at the Cuatro Vientos airport.
3. Note: the addresses and homilies of the Holy Father in Madrid are uploaded to the Vatican WYD page as soon as they have been delivered.

A Pontifical Mass has just been celebrated by the Ordinary of Toulouse, Archbishop Robert Le Gall, at the main church for Traditional activities in Madrid, the parish church of Saint Francis de Sales (San Francisco de Sales). The setting was Byrd's Mass for four voices.
Remember: wherever you are in the world, pray for the young men and women in Juventutem activities: partial indulgences can be gained for prayers for the young faithful in Madrid from yesterday until next Sunday, "if, at least with a contrite spirit, [the faithful around the world] will raise their prayer to God the Holy Spirit, so that young people are drawn to charity and given the strength to proclaim the Gospel with their life."

Do not be ashamed of the Lord!
N’ayez pas honte du Seigneur!
Of course, there is no lack of difficulties. There are tensions and ongoing conflicts all over the world, even to the shedding of blood. Justice and the unique value of the human person are easily surrendered to selfish, material and ideological interests. Nature and the environment, created by God with so much love, are not respected. Moreover, many young people look worriedly to the future, as they search for work, or because they have lost their job or because the one they have is precarious or uncertain. There are others who need help either to avoid drugs or to recover from their use. There are even some who, because of their faith in Christ, suffer discrimination which leads to contempt and persecution, open or hidden, which they endure in various regions and countries. They are harassed to give him up, depriving them of the signs of his presence in public life, not allowing even the mention of his holy name. But, with all my heart, I say again to you young people: let nothing and no one take away your peace; do not be ashamed of the Lord. He did not spare himself in becoming one like us and in experiencing our anguish so as to lift it up to God, and in this way he saved us.

Certes, les difficultés ne manquent pas. Des tensions et des confrontations existent en tant d’endroits du monde, avec même du sang qui coule. La justice et la haute valeur de la personne humaine se plient facilement à des intérêts égoïstes, matériels et idéologiques. L’environnement et la nature que Dieu a créés avec tant d’amour ne sont pas respectés comme il se doit. De plus, beaucoup de jeunes regardent avec préoccupation leur avenir face à la difficulté de trouver un emploi digne ou bien pour l’avoir perdu ou encore parce que celui qu’ils ont est précaire et n’est pas assuré. Il y en a d’autres qui ont besoin d’aide pour ne pas tomber dans les filets de la drogue, d’une aide efficace si par malheur ils y sont déjà tombés. À cause de leur foi dans le Christ, beaucoup souffrent en eux-mêmes la discrimination, qui conduit à la dépréciation et à la persécution ouverte ou larvée qui afflige des régions déterminées de certains pays. Ils sont aussi sollicités pour s’éloigner de Lui, en les privant des signes de sa présence dans la vie publique, et en réduisant au silence son Nom même. Pourtant aujourd’hui, je redis aux jeunes, avec toute la force de mon cœur, que rien ni personne ne vous prive de la paix ! N’ayez pas honte du Seigneur ! Il n’a rien objecté à se faire l’un de nous et à faire l’expérience de nos angoisses pour nous élever vers Dieu, et faisant ainsi il nous a sauvés.

WYD: Can you feel the love? [Updated]
So, what was the church granted by the Archdiocese of Madrid for the main activities (catecheses and public Masses) of Traditional-minded Catholics during World Youth Day? The beautiful parish church of San Eduardo, a remarkable masterpiece of Christian architecture, in the Tetuán district (it is the building in the middle, with the large cross; tip: reader; source). Who needs one of the hundreds of regular-looking churches in the city, when one may have access to this stunning building?
[UPDATE:] Acción Litúrgica reports that the main venue has just been changed to the Parish Church of Saint Francis de Sales (San Francisco de Sales) , near the Estrecho (Line 1) metro station. It looks like a fine church, and it is good that some regard was shown to the needs of Traditional-minded faithful (it can often be quite challenging to adapt a church built specifically for the new liturgy to the needs of the Traditional Mass).
Note: as mentioned in a previous post, some other activities will take place in the conventual church of the Monastery of the Visitation (Tercer Monasterio de la Visitación), the regular venue for traditional Masses in the diocese.

Plenary Indulgence for those going to Madrid;
Partial indulgence for those praying for WYD
The great metropolis in the very center of the rugged Castilian plateau will host World Youth Day - and the Apostolic Penitentiary made public today that those going to Madrid, "in a spirit of pilgrimage", an take part in any foreseen activity sometime from August 16 to August 21, may benefit of the plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions.
Those not going to Madrid may gain partial indulgences if they "pray for the spiritual purposes of this meeting and for its happy outcome". Time to pray for those numerous well-meaning traditional-minded young Catholics who will take part in Juventutem activities, and for the traditional priests and religious accompanying them - and gain indulgences at the same time!

Fast decline of the number of Catholics
"España será católica, o no será," (Spain shall be Catholic, or it shall not be) Menéndez Pelayo famously said. If so, the day is fast approaching in which Spain will be no more. From yesterday's edition of El País:
"Things are not as God orders anymore, Manuel and María believe. They were married in the Church in the middle of the last century and had their three children baptized, [and] educated in religious schools. Two of them got married before the altar in the 1980s, and the third before a judge and while already living with her boyfriend, in the 1990s. There was baptism for the three grandchildren, but only two had their first communion. Of these three generations, between 15 and 82, the grandparents are the only ones who go to Mass every Sunday. 'That is what there is,' grandmother María sums up.
"That is what there is is what in great measure happened to this Madrilenian family of unmentioned surnames. And the Spain that Pope Benedict XVI will visit for a third time, the old spiritual reserve of the West, is secularizing fast. Catholics are still a majority that is clear, but that decreases every year: 71.7% of Spaniards now declare themselves as such, compared to 82.1% in 2001. A fall of over 10% in one decade. Atheists and non-believers are already one in every four citizens: they have climbed to 24.3% compared to the 14.6% of 2001, according to the Center of Sociological Research (CIS). The remainder belongs to other faiths (2.4%) or did not respond.
" 'In our church, there are mostly elders and some children. One barely sees persons of other age groups,' María describes, after recalling once overflowing churches where now the faithful are rare at noon on Sundays. The numbers of the CIS back her observation: belief in Catholicism falls drastically with age. For those over 65, 9 in every 10 Spaniards profess to be believers, and the proportion falls to 56.8% among those who are between 18 and 24, according to the poll of this past July. The portrait offers other elements: the higher the education, the lower the belief (50.2% of believers among those with higher education), and greater secularization in large cities (53% of believers) than in the countryside (8 [believers] in 10)."

For the opening of the Holy Door which inaugurates the Jubilee of Santiago de Compostela of 2010, I extend a cordial greeting to you, Your Excellency, and to the participants in this important ceremony, as well as to the pastors and faithful of this particular Church which by its immemorial bond with the Apostle James is deeply rooted in the Gospel of Christ, offering this spiritual treasure to his children and to the pilgrims who come from Galicia, from other parts of Spain, from Europe and from the furthest corners of the world.
This solemn act opens a special season of grace and forgiveness, the season of the "Great Pardon", as it is called by tradition. It is a special opportunity for believers to reflect on their genuine vocation to holiness of life, to be imbued with the word of God that enlightens and challenges them and to recognize Christ who comes to meet them, accompanies them in the vicissitudes of their journey in the world and gives himself to them personally, especially in the Eucharist. ...
Santiago de Compostela has long been distinguished as a very important destination for pilgrims, whose steps have marked out a Way which is called after the Apostle to whose tomb people come especially from the most diverse regions of Europe to renew and strengthen their faith. It is a Way sown with so many demonstrations of fervour, repentance, hospitality, art and culture which speak to us eloquently of the spiritual roots of the Old Continent.
... On the Way, new horizons are contemplated that prompt one to reflect on the narrowness of one's own life and the immensity that the human being has within him and outside him, preparing him to go in search of what his heart truly yearns for. Open to wonder and to transcendence, the pilgrim lets himself be instructed by the word of God, and in this way cleanses his faith from unfounded attachments and fears. This is what the Risen Lord did with the disciples who, dazed and downhearted, were on their way to Emmaus. When he added to his words the gesture of breaking the bread, the disciples' "eyes were opened" (Lk 24: 31) and they recognized him whom they thought had been overcome by death.
So they had a personal encounter with Christ, who lives for ever and is part of their lives. At that moment, their first and most ardent wish was to proclaim and tell the others what had happened (cf. Lk 24: 35).
I fervently ask the Lord to accompany the pilgrims, to make himself known and to enter their hearts, "so that they may have life, and have it abundantly" (Jn 10: 10). This is the true objective, grace, which merely walking the Way alone cannot enable one to achieve and which leads the pilgrim to become a witness to others of the fact that Christ lives and is our eternal hope of salvation. In this Archdiocese, together with many other ecclesial organizations, many pastoral projects have been implemented to contribute to reaching this essential goal of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, of a spiritual character, although in some cases there is a tendency to ignore or distort it.

In this circumstance, I express my special closeness to the pilgrims who have come and who will continue to come to Santiago. I ask them to treasure the evocative experiences of faith, charity and brotherhood that they meet with their journey, to experience the Way especially inwardly, letting themselves be challenged by the call that the Lord makes to each one of them. Thus they will be able to say joyfully and firmly at the Portico of Glory: "I believe". I ask them also not to forget in their prayers those who could not accompany them, their families and friends, the sick and the needy, emigrants, people with a wavering faith and the People of God with their Pastors.
... I entrust the spiritual and pastoral fruits of this Holy Year to our Mother in Heaven, the Pilgrim Virgin, to the Apostle James, the "friend of the Lord", and at the same time I impart the Apostolic Blessing to all with affection.
