YOUR CONTRIBUTION IS IMPORTANT: Making a List of Traditional Catholic Schools in the United States

Dear readers,

About three years ago we tried to assemble a list of Traditional Catholic schools in the United States. At the time, due to other ongoing issues, the list couldn't be finished.

So now we are trying again: your contribution is essential. For the purpose of this list, we are defining a Traditional School as one which offers the Traditional Latin Mass for the student body at least ONCE a week.

Schools that offer the Ordinariate Mass or an Eastern Catholic liturgy will also be included.

Please, help us to finally assemble this list: any school for any age is acceptable, as well as different settings (including boarding and non-boarding settings).

Please, send your contribution to NEWCATHOLIC at GMAIL dot COM, with the subject: "CATHOLIC SCHOOL LIST".

Include name, website, address, if the school is co-ed or not, and frequency of mass.

Thank you!

"Fiducia Supplicans and the Meaning of Faith" - Major treatment of problems in Declaration by Fr Emmanuel Perrier, OP

(From the highly-esteemed Revue Thomiste: source.)

The "Fiducia supplicans" declaration of December 18, 2023 has caused quite a stir. In this article, we give the main reasons why.

As sons of the Church founded on the apostles, we cannot but be alarmed at the turmoil among the Christian people caused by a text coming from the Holy Father's entourage[1]. It is unbearable to see Christ's faithful losing confidence in the word of the universal shepherd, to see priests torn between their filial attachment and the practical consequences this text will force them to face, to see bishops divided.

This far-reaching phenomenon is indicative of a reaction in the sensus fidei. The "sense of faith" (sensus fidei) is the Christian people's attachment to the truths of faith and morals[2]. This common, "universal" and "indefectible" attachment stems from the fact that every believer is moved by the one Spirit of God to embrace the same truths. This is why, when statements concerning faith and morals offend the sensus fidei, an instinctive movement of distrust arises that manifests itself collectively. It is necessary, however, to examine the legitimacy of this movement and the reasons behind it. We will confine ourselves here to the six reasons that seem to us the most salient.

Statement From Suspended Kentucky TLM Priests

As some readers may be aware, two Missionaries of Saint John the Baptist priests who celebrate (exclusively) the TLM at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Park Hills, Kentucky, had their faculties removed by the bishop of Covington.

I met both of them a few years ago, impressed these former Fathers of Mercy were able to start a new religious community that -- unlike the Fathers of Mercy -- uses the traditional Latin books, while preserving the parish mission and homiletics apostolate their former community is known for within the conservative novus ordo world. They are good men.

In the interest of presenting their side of the story, the following is their news release on the matter:

Statement on behalf of Missionaries of Saint John the Baptist, Inc., On the Sudden Loss of the Public Celebration of the Mass and Sacraments at Our Lady of Lourdes Church

Park Hills, KY (1/25/2024): Missionaries of St. John the Baptist, Inc., release the following statement concerning Fr. Shannon Collins, MSJB, and Fr. Sean Kopczynski, MSJB, and the sudden loss of their faculties to perform public ministry as priests at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

  • The Missionaries, Fr. Shannon and Fr. Sean, are veteran Roman Catholic priests in good standing and consecrated religious members of a religious community known as the Missionaries of St. John the Baptist and were the priests that staffed the Traditional Latin Mass Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes, under the headship of His Excellency, Bishop John Iffert, the current prelate of the Diocese of Covington, Kentucky.

  • The Missionaries seek to be teachers of truth and have never, to the best of their knowledge, promoted any errors in regard to the Holy Faith or taught anything contrary to the perennial Catechism of the Catholic Church.

African, Belgian, and Dutch Bishops before the challenge of Fiducia Supplicans - by Roberto de Mattei

Roberto de Mattei
January 24, 2024

The Bishops' Conference of the North African Region (Cerna) meeting in Rabat, Morocco, Jan. 11-15, approved the Declaration Fiducia supplicans (see here), stipulating, regarding the "pastoral practice of blessings," that it is possible to give the blessing not only individually, but also to people "in an irregular situation" who present themselves together requesting it, provided this "does not create confusion for those concerned themselves or for others." This stance cracked the unanimity that had been created around the communiqué of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar, signed by Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo, in which the African bishops expressed clear opposition to Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández's document (see here).

Heartfelt thanks to Speaker Mike Johnson for his support for this act of Worship that was highly symbolic of the appreciation conservatives in the House have shown to Traditional Catholics following the recent acts of persecution.

"On Fiducia supplicans: Anonymous and Anomalous Blessings" - By Fr Serafino M. Lanzetta

 Fr. Serafino Lanzetta
for Rorate Caeli

With the declaration Fiducia supplicans (FS) of 18 December 2023, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, with some haste compared to the fresh synodal outcomes, asked Pope Francis ex audientia to approve new blessings, created ad hoc “for couples in irregular situations” and “couples of the same sex” The emphasis is on the 'couple' in both cases. In order to approve it at the level of principle, thus justifying its moral acts, an attempt is made to separate the liturgical aspect of the blessing from its previous, 'theological' but not ritual stage. With what results?

Bene-dicere without saying it

"Vatican II and the new liturgy have invented a new magisterial mode: dogmatic regression": Interview with Claude Barthe

On the occasion of the revised and expanded reissue of his book "Trouver-t-il encore la foi sur terre [Will He still find faith on earth?]," we interviewed Abbé Claude Barthe.

Michel Janva: The title of your book is a quotation from the Gospel. In view of the current evolution of the Catholic religion (growth in Africa and Asia, decline in Europe...), is it possible that it could disappear in Western Europe, and therefore in Rome, just as it was practically eliminated from North Africa at the beginning of the Middle Ages?

Abbé Claude Barthe: Note that Christ's question concerns the faith that could disappear, not the number of people who call themselves Catholics. It's perfectly possible to be a Catholic by identity card, so to speak, and have been shipwrecked in the faith.

Reaction of Cardinals and Bishops to Fiducia Supplicans: “ God can providentially turn evil into a greater good.”

 Father Claude Barthe
Le Salon Beige/Res Novae

God can providentially turn evil into a greater good. The declaration Fiducia supplicans from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, which states in its n. 31 that it is possible to bless “couples in irregular situations and couples of the same sex”, created a new situation: an important number of bishops around the world, sometimes entire episcopates, have said that they would not receive this official teaching that they find in complete rupture with the constant teaching of the Church and therefore have forbidden their priests to give such blessings. It is a sign of hope at a time of immense dereliction for a flock who often feels without a shepherd.

Two observations are necessary:

Bp. Schneider's "Prayer for Imploring Holy Popes"

Praised be Jesus Christ!

Dear faithful Catholics, especially those who suffer as they witness our Holy Mother Church live through an unprecedented crisis. Dear Catholic fathers and mothers of families! Dear Catholic young people! Dear innocent Catholic children! And especially dear religious contemplative Sisters, the spiritual gems of the Church! Dear Catholic seminarians! Dear Catholic priests, who are “the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus”!

Panama Bleeds: A Story of Tradition Persecuted and Restored

A traditional Catholic activist in Panama sent me the following report on what is happening in his country. It was first published at my Substack, Tradition & Sanity, on December 11, 2023. It’s important for those of us who live in countries where the Latin Mass is more plentifully available to learn about the hardships of our brethren who are suffering under bishops even more cruel and heterodox than our own, and to pray for them.—PAK

December 13, 2020: First Holy Mass with the SSPX, in an apartment into which more than 100 people tried to fit.

There is a famous movie for children where one of the characters says “Look beyond what you see.” This brings the audience to reflect on what it might mean to see further than what is in plain sight or obvious within our surroundings. This advice can be applied to any part of our lives, but specifically it has a Counter-Revolutionary meaning, since the Catholic is obligated to see further than the false panorama the Revolution has implanted as our usual, typical, and constant environment.

Africa Parts Ways: Collective Rejection of Fiducia Supplicans by all Catholic Churches in Africa (Full Document)

In December, soon after Fiducia Supplicans was published, Cardinal Ambongo of Kinshasa, president of the collective Symposium of Bishops' Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM), asked for contributions from the African churches for a collective response.,

The document was published today, and completely rejects the possibility of blessings of same-sex unions (couples, etc, it doesn't matter).

Pope Francis and the "global conflict" in 2024 - by Roberto de Mattei

The "Trinity" nuclear test, first detonation of an atomic bomb
New Mexico, July 16, 1945

What is the state of the world in this opening of 2024? A broad picture was outlined by Pope Francis in his Jan. 8 address to ambassadors to the Holy See, gathered for the traditional New Year's audience.

There is a first point that deserves to be emphasized. Pope Francis does not habitually quote Pius XII. This time he did so twice in the same speech, referring back to Pius XII's famous Radiomessage to the Peoples of the Whole World of December 24, 1944, in which the Pope proposed the foundations of a new international order, developing important concepts, such as the difference between the "people" and the "mass," which constitutes the degeneration of democracy. A speech, that of Pius XII, which deserves to be reread, in the run-up to the European elections in June 2024.

Traditionalist Remedies for the Autoimmune Disease Gripping the Church on Earth

On December 14, 2023, the New York publisher Angelico Press announced the release of my latest book, Bound by Truth: Authority, Obedience, Tradition, and the Common Good. Four days later, Cardinal Fernández dropped his fiduciary supplication, and the Catholic world went berserk (rightly so). In that sense, the end of 2023 might not have seemed like an auspicious time for rolling out a new book!

Fiducia Supplicans & Bank Robbery: Cognitive Dissonance in the Life of the Church

A guest article.

Imagine you witness a man walk into a bank, point a gun at the teller, and say "I have no intention of legitimizing bank-robbing, but would you please give me $10,000 in the next five minutes?"

Horrified, you run to the nearest police station and relate what you saw, but to your shock the policeman looks at you with scorn: "Are you crazy? That poor fellow explicitly said he had no intention of bank robbing. He was simply asking for money. I hope the teller wasn't so unkind as to refuse him."

Mysticism, Sex, and Justification for Sin: A Rediscovered 1998 Publication by Victor Manuel Fernández — Full text of chapters 7-9

[Warning: Explicit Material]

In 1998, Victor Manuel Fernández published a book entitled La Pasión Mística: espiritualidad y sensualidad ["Mystical Passion: Spirituality and Sensuality"] (Ediciones Dabar). Like the related book Heal Me With Your Mouth: The Art of Kissing (by its author's admission, written apparently as a high school guide), this book of blasphemous nearly pornographic interpretations of the mystics and their spiritual experiences of ecstasy seemed to have disappeared, to have been forgotten and unmentioned — until now, when people who have the good of the Church at heart discovered the text and now make it available in its entirety (PDF download in Spanish here). The most scabrous chapters are 7, 8, and 9, which are given below, in full, in English translation (emphases added).

Fontgombault Sermon for the Epiphany 2024: "Let us remain with the Lord in the crib of our souls"

Epiphany

Sermon of the Right Reverend Dom Jean Pateau
Father Abbot of Our Lady of Fontgombault
Fontgombault, January 6, 2024

Et procidentes adoraverunt eum.
And falling down they adored Him.
(Mt 2:11)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
My dearly beloved Sons,

After you crossed the gate of the church, you may have remarked, if you stopped a few moments before the crib, that the Child Jesus placed there had been changed. The slumbering child wrapped in swaddling clothes has been replaced by a smiling child extending His arms.

The Church celebrates today the mystery of the Epiphany. This Greek word means “manifestation”, or “apparition”. In the Eastern Churches, this feast is called “Theophany”, the manifestation of God. Already during Christmas night, the shepherds, instructed by the angels, had come to adore the Divine Child in the crib. Today, the Lord manifests Himself to the Gentiles through the three Wise Men. A star has led them towards Judaea. Thus is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, recalled in the reading:

Ecclesiastical Province of Rennes, France: no blessings for homosexual or irregular couples, but only for individuals

The bishops of the Ecclesiastical Province of Rennes have asked that no homosexual or irregular "couples" be blessed, but only individuals. The statement is an interesting step in the episcopal criticism and clarification of Fiducia supplicans. [No one would have expected an entire province of French bishops to stand up to the Vatican this way! - PK]

The statement reads:

In our society, where marriage has been trivialized by becoming a notion of civil law that ignores the foundational specificity of sexual difference, we have the mission to prophetically affirm, "with gentleness and respect" (1 Pet 3:16), the great beauty of God's design that created the human being, male and female, and that Christ recalled. In this context, it is right, as the Declaration emphasizes, not to contribute to creating "confusion" (n. 4, 5, 30, 31, 39) or "scandal" (n. 30, 39). For this reason, it is appropriate to spontaneously bless, individually, each of the two persons forming a couple, whatever their sexual orientation, who humbly ask God's blessing, with the desire to conform more and more to his holy will.

Parish Priest Criticizes Francis in Homily- And Receives Sustained Applause from His Flock, and is Excommunicated

"Fiducia Supplicans" and the Upcoming Conclave - by Roberto de Mattei

 Roberto de Mattei
Corrispondenza Romana
December 27, 2023

The promulgation of the Declaration of the Doctrine for the Faith Fiducia supplicans on Dec. 18, 2023 and the reactions that followed it offer us a possible key to the next conclave.

The author of the Declaration is Pope Francis' close collaborator and ghost writer, Victor Manuel Fernández, who was appointed prefect of the new Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith on July 1st, 2023 and created cardinal the following September 30th. The document is signed ex audientia by Pope Francis, in a manner that makes it unappealable. Normally the document should be an expression of the Church's ordinary Magisterium, but it is not, precisely because by departing from Church teaching it loses all character of "magisteriality."

Christmas Midnight Mass 2023: Fontgombault Sermon - Saint Francis and the Nativity Scene

Christmas
Midnight Mass

Sermon of the Right Reverend Dom Jean Pateau
Father Abbot of Our Lady of Fontgombault
Fontgombault, December 25th, 2023

Domine, ut videam.
Lord, that I may see.
(Lk 18:41)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

My dearly beloved Sons,

Eight hundred years ago, St. Francis of Assisi, three years before his death, staged in a grotto of a little town of Italy, Greccio, the first living crèche: a manger full of hay, a donkey, an ox, and inhabitants of the village impersonating Mary, Joseph, shepherds, and wise men. Some had also prepared

… torches and candles, to illuminate the night which saw the shining Star rising, that enlightens all centuries… The woods were resounding with songs, and the mountains reverberating with their joyful echoes. (Life of St. Francis of Assisi, Vita Prima, chap. 30. v. 1)

Christmas of wars: War on earth, War against the liturgy, War of shepherds in the church who defend evil: But there are still some who are faithful

A message from the Fraternity of Saint Vincent Ferrer

Chéméré-le-Roi, France

"The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light." (Is. 9:1)

Dear friends,

As is the custom, I would like to bring you a message of peace, the message that the angels sang above the manger in Bethlehem: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace to men of good will" (Lk 2:14). But the celestial symphony is overshadowed by the din of war.

Merry Christmas!

Traditional Catholic Religious Order Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer- on Fiducia supplicans

 On the Declaration Fiducia Supplicans

The Congregation of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer stands with Cardinal Müller, the bishops of Malawi, Kazakhstan, Zambia and Nigeria, with Archbishop Viganò, Bishop Strickland and all bishops, priests and faithful who recognise that the priestly blessing of couples in "irregular relationships" and the blessing of "homosexual couples" is opposed to Catholic Faith and Morals; opposed to the teaching of the Church for the last two thousand years; and must be opposed by us and by all Catholics.

On December 22, 2023

In response to numerous appeals from bishops, clergy, monastics, church movements, and individual laity of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church regarding the Declaration of the Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith "Fiducia Supplicans" (December 18, 2023) on the pastoral meaning of blessings, after consulting with relevant experts and competent institutions, I would like to inform you of the following:

Bishops of Cameroon Firmly Reject Francis’ Gay Declaration: “Homosexual Practices are a Clear Sign of the Implosive Decadence of Civilizations”

Declaration of the Bishops of Cameroon on homosexuality and the blessing of "homosexual couples".

In the face of semantic abuses designed to distort the value of realities and the true meaning of the notions of family, couple, spouse, sexuality and marriage.

In face of the wave of indignation, questioning, and concern that the Declaration "Fiducia supplicans" on the question of the blessing of homosexual couples has aroused among the people of God.

In the name of the truth of the Gospel and for the sake of human dignity and the salvation of all mankind in Jesus Christ.

We, the Bishops of Cameroon, on the subject of homosexuality and the blessing of "homosexual couples", unanimously declare the following:

Cardinal Ambongo, President of the African Conferences, requests a United African response to Francis’ Gay Declaration

In some explosive news today, the President of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa & Madagascar (SECAM), Cardinal Ambongo (Archbishop of Kinshasa), has indicated the great “perplexity” Francis’ Gay Declaration (“Fiducia supplicans”) has caused among African Christians.

He has requested all African conferences of bishops to formulate a united African response to the declaration.

“The ambiguity of this declaration—which lends itself to many interpretations & manipulations—is causing much perplexity among the faithful & I believe that...we need to speak out clearly on this issue in order to give clear guidance to our Christians.”

December 21st: Feast of Saint Thomas the Apostle

The feast of St. Thomas the Apostle has been kept on this day, December 21 from at least the ninth century.  It was moved to July 3, the day mentioned by St. Jerome as the date of his martyrdom in India, by those who revised the calendar after the Second Vatican Council.  They did this so that his feast would not interrupt the major ferial days of Advent leading to Christmas.  They wanted to tidy things up, calendar wise.  They considered the feast of St. Thomas in later Advent out of place.  Their liturgical rationalism made them blind to the wonderful interruption of late Advent made possible by the feast of this apostle.

Nigeria, the largest country in Africa — its Bishops adamantly reject Francis’ Gay Declaration

Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa. This powerhouse of the continent has a bright demographic future, and its population counts at least 30 million Catholics, most of whom attend weekly Mass.

The Nigerian Bishops Conference issued a clear statement today on Francis’ Gay Declaration “Fiducia Supplicans”. Its conclusion couldn’t have been any clearer:

“In conclusion, the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria assures the entire People of God that the teaching of the Catholic Church on marriage remains the same. There is, therefore, no possibility in the Church of blessing of same-sex unions and activities. That would go against God’s law, the teachings of the Church, the laws of our nation, and the cultural sensitivities of our people.”

Fiducia Supplicans Shatters the Myth of Pope Francis as the "Pope of the Peripheries"

A central tenet of the myth of pro-Francis hagiography has, until this point, been that he is the "Pope of the Peripheries"- the first Pope from the Global South, with a special focus on speaking for non-Western Catholics such as the burgeoning Catholic population of Africa. His opposition, the hagiography goes, comes from the heart of the consumerist West: the United States and its Catholic conservatives, who have been drumming up opposition to Pope Francis (an opposition which is supposedly manifested in a desire for the Traditional Latin Mass).

Ukraine Bishops Conference Chooses Sides: Against Francis' Gay Declaration - "There is no blessing for living in sin": "The document does not provide clear distinctions"

Bishops of Ukraine: there is no blessing for living in sin

December 19, 2023

Communiqué of the Ukrainian Bishops' Conference on the Declaration of the Dicastery of the Faith "FIDUCIA SUPPLICANS" on the Pastoral Significance of Blessings.

The document of the Vatican's Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith examines the different types of blessings that can be given by clergy outside the liturgy. The document also emphasizes that only those who want to live a life pleasing to God and ask for a blessing can be blessed liturgically. Instead, it expands the understanding of extra-liturgical blessing, which is usually given to all people, by introducing the possibility of "blessing same-sex couples." It is this possibility that has caused a storm of reactions and misunderstandings about the moral and doctrinal issues in the Catholic Church regarding this kind of blessing.

And this is because the concept of "blessing" is perceived by many as "permission", especially as "permission to sin". While the entire document makes it clear that there is no "permission" or "blessing" for homosexual cohabitation or any life of sin, nor any change in the Church's traditional teaching on marriage, the notion of blessing same-sex couples, or sacramentally unregulated couples, can be perceived as legalizing these relationships.

The document seeks to emphasize the boundless love of God for all people, sinners included, and in this regard to show that the Church does not reject these people, namely, persons with homosexual tendencies or even actions. However, it seems that the text does not clearly distinguish between a person and his or her situation, mercifully accepting this person and expressing disagreement with his or her sin. [emphasis added]

African Catholic Bishops Choose Sides -- Against Francis' and Tucho's Gay Advocacy

First, the Conference of Bishops of Malawi:

"Blessings of any kind and for same sex unions of any kind are not permitted in Malawi."

Then, that of Zambia:

"In order to avoid any pastoral confusion and ambiguity as well as not to break the law of our country which forbids same sex unions and activities, ... the Conference guides that the Declaration from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith of December 18th, 2023, concerning the blessing of same-sex couples be taken as for further reflection, and not for implementation in Zambia."

Quo usque tandem? Doctrine of Faith dicastery "blesses" sin against nature

Roberto de Mattei

December 20, 2023

The Declaration Fiducia supplicans on the pastoral meaning of blessings issued on December 18, 2023 by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith marks one of the lowest points of Pope Francis' pontificate. Indeed, this document, contradicting Church doctrine, approves and in fact promotes the "blessing" of "couples" living in an intrinsically immoral situation, with a special focus on homosexual couples.

To understand the origins of what happened, one must go back to the early 1970s, when, on the wave of the 1968 Revolution, but also of the post-conciliar "new morality," forms of "openness" to homosexual relationships began to spread in the Church. According to traditional doctrine, the sexual act is in itself, by its very nature, ordered to procreation and is good only if it takes place within marriage, without being diverted from its purpose. Instead, for the new theologians, the sexual act is always good because it constitutes the most intimate and intense moment of human love, regardless of whether or not it is ordered to procreation, whether or not it takes place within marriage, and whether or not it involves men and women of different or of the same sex.
