Some Notes on Cardinal Fernández’s Mariology: “Ignorance of Scripture is Ignorance of Christ”[1]

Some Notes on Cardinal Fernández’s Mariology: “Ignorance of Scripture is Ignorance of Christ”[1]

A guest article by a priest who writes under the name Fr. Romano Tommasi.

The current prefect of the formerly known Roman Inquisition (Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith) has publicly highlighted his biblical studies and promoted his reputation as an academic, based upon his asserted thesis work at the Gregorian University.

Canonical Analysis: The 2026 DDF Decree on the SSPX

By the Canon of Shaftesbury, a judicial vicar in a major archdiocese. [This contribution is of the sole responsibility of its author; it does not represent the official position of Rorate Cæli.]

The question is whether the Decree and Explanatory Note issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) on July 2, 2026 actually accomplished what many have said, namely, the excommunication of six bishops, over seven hundred priests, and an unspecified number of the faithful. The short answer, reading the documents against the Code of Canon Law, is that they did not.

DECREE OF EXCOMMUNICATION PUBLISHED (FULL TRANSLATION) -- WITH EXPLANATORY NOTE: Priests and Faithful in Schism and Subject to Excommunication - SSPX Consecrations

Full translation in English below (by Rorate)

[Update (11 am EDT): the Dicastery also published afterwards a"Procedure for the Reconciliation of Priests of the Society of Saint Pius X", and another for the Lay Faithful, with Profession of Faith and Formula of Adherence. Our translations are available here.]

DICASTERY FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH

Prot. N. 99/2009

DECREE

Notwithstanding the warnings addressed to the Superior General of the Society of Saint Pius X, Bishop Alfonso de Galarreta, having committed an act of a schismatic nature by means of the episcopal consecration of four priests, without a pontifical mandate and against the will of the Supreme Pontiff, has incurred ipso facto the penalties provided for by can. 1387 and can. 1364 § 1 CIC 2021.

Mysticism, Sex, and Justification for Sin: A Rediscovered 1998 Publication by Victor Manuel Fernández — Full text of chapters 7-9

[Warning: Explicit Material]

In 1998, Victor Manuel Fernández published a book entitled La Pasión Mística: espiritualidad y sensualidad ["Mystical Passion: Spirituality and Sensuality"] (Ediciones Dabar). Like the related book Heal Me With Your Mouth: The Art of Kissing (by its author's admission, written apparently as a high school guide), this book of blasphemous nearly pornographic interpretations of the mystics and their spiritual experiences of ecstasy seemed to have disappeared, to have been forgotten and unmentioned — until now, when people who have the good of the Church at heart discovered the text and now make it available in its entirety (PDF download in Spanish here). The most scabrous chapters are 7, 8, and 9, which are given below, in full, in English translation (emphases added).

A Rocky Beginning for Tucho Fernandez: Erotic Poetry, "Youth Ministry," and Covering Up for Predators

The appointment of Tucho Fernandez as Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith has met with  disapproval across the Catholic world-- even from unlikely sources.

Francis's Efforts to Remake the Church in His Image Are Doomed to Failure

The appointment of Tucho Fernandez as head of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith, in connection with the Synod on Synodality, augurs big changes in the Catholic Church. Soon-to-be Cardinal Fernandez, along with Cardinals McElroy and Cupich, hope to succeed in their project of undoing St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI's moral theology from the ground up, abolishing the notion of intrinsic evil and thereby opening the door for the Church to provide communion (and perhaps even blessings) indifferently to all. At the same time, Cardinal Roche works diligently to permanently abolish the Traditional Latin Mass, the great vehicle for transmitting Catholic faith throughout the ages. This comes in connection with high-profile new episcopal appointments in Toronto, Brussels, and Madrid-- modern bishops, men who subscribe to Francis's radical vision for the Church. The present moment is, in the ungainly phrase of one journalist, "an ecclesial earthquake." The changes, we are told, are irreversible and permanent. It will be Francis's Church, Francis's magisterium, from here on out.

Fabulous Tucho Fernandez named Prefect for the Doctrine of the Faith: Like a Modern "Artist", "Piss Christ Pope" considers his job to shock

Modern "Art": after a century of so much nonsense in the name of art, we are still bombarded daily by bad "creations" whose only justification is the need to "shock" the public.

Just last week, Francis himself shocked the Catholic world once again by honoring and greeting one of the causes célèbres of American art: Andres Serrano, the New York "artist" photographer whose 1987 work "Piss Christ" (a photograph of a Crucifix submerged in his own urine) led to an actual cut of federal funding of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Francis is the "Piss Christ pope": in order to shock and cause mayhem for this and future generations, irrespective of merit and good sense, he will humiliate the Lord repeatedly. His "art" is to shock.

And he did shock the Catholic world once again today by naming his confidante, ghost-writer, and Argentine theologian Victor Manuel "Tucho" Fernández new prefect for the Doctrine of the Faith. We published a samizdat version of fabulous Tucho's most famous work here in Rorate in 2017: Heal Me With Your Mouth: The Art of Kissing.

For the Record - Samizdat - Full Text of Archbishop Tucho Fernandez's "Heal Me with Your Mouth: The Art of Kissing"

Archbishop Víctor Manuel “Tucho” Fernández, rector of the the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina in Buenos Aires and ghostwriter for Pope Francis, has a long track record of modernist theological writings that stretch long before he penned Amoris Laetitia, Evangelii Gaudium, or Laudato Sii for the Argentine pontiff. We recently published a translation of Tucho's latest defense of the most heterodox assertions that can be derived from Amoris Laetitia. Besides his articles in the 1990s criticizing John Paul II's teachings about intrinsic evils, which it appears he sloppily copy-pasted into Amoris Laetitia, Tucho's perhaps most revealing writing is his infamous 1995 book, whose contents are as sleazy, inappropriate, and absurd as its title: Heal Me with your Mouth: The Art of Kissing

A friend of Rorate has translated into English the full text of Archbishop "Tucho" Fernandez' Heal Me with Your Mouth: The Art of Kissing, and we now publish this full translation below, with a disclaimer for some disturbing images and content, especially considering that the author is an ordained minister of the Church bound by a vow of celibacy.

Family Synods were a hugely expensive Fraud: Essential Passages of Exhortation had already been written 10 years ago

Yes, the fabulous Rector of the Catholic University of Argentina (UCA), elevated to the position of titular Archbishop -- His Excellency Victor Manuel "Tucho" Fernández. We had already reported here in January that he was the main ghost-writer of the post-synodal Exhortation (later published under the title Amoris Laetitia, "The Joy of Love"). This of course had been clear since the Pope named him a member of the Synod drafting committee: as we had called him at the time, "the Pope's closest theological adviser and first named bishop, (fabulously efficient) Rector of the Catholic University of Argentina, member of the original 6-liberal Synod drafting commission".
