Traditional Mass celebrated for the first time in centuries in Elgin Cathedral, Scotland

Last weekend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass returned to one of Scotland's most impressive ruined cathedrals for the first time in over four centuries. The Mass, celebrated in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite by Fr Ross Crichton on Saturday 18 May, was sung in the cathedral's Huntly Aisle and heard by around thirty people, many of whom were participating in the Confraternity of St Ninian's weekend retreat to nearby Pluscarden Abbey. It is locally understood that no previous celebration of Mass had taken place within the ruin since it was abandoned by the Church during the Reformation c.1560. The cathedral, which was founded in 1224, was one of the most prominent centres of the mediaeval Church in Scotland and its impressive structure was widely famed as the "Lantern of the North".

You Report: a Traditional double first in Dundee, Scotland

On Sunday 21st August the royal and ancient Diocese of Dunkeld in Scotland celebrated a double first. His Excellency Bishop Robson, the Ordinary of the diocese, conferred Confirmation on three children in the Traditional Rite. Confirmations were followed by a First Solemn High Mass in the presence of an Ordinary by Fr Ninian Doohan who was raised to the sacred priesthood by Bishop Robson on the Solemnity of the Feast of the Assumption in St Andrew’s Cathedral, Dundee.

The British referendum of June 23rd (Brexit) has sanctioned the definitive collapse of a myth: the dream of “a “Europe without frontiers”, built on the ruins of its national States.

The Europeanist project, launched by the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, had in itself the seeds of its own self-destruction. It was completely illusory to expect the implementation of an economic, monetary union before a political union; or, even worse, to envisage using monetary integration in order to establish political unification. The plan, though, to reach political unity by extirpating those spiritual roots that bind men together was even more illusory. The Charter of Fundamental Human Rights of the European Union approved by the European Council in Nice in December 2000, not only expunges any reference to Europe’s religious roots, but has in itself a visceral negation of the natural and Christian order. Article 21, by introducing the prohibition of any discrimination related to “sexual tendencies”, contains, in nuce, the legalization of the crime of homophobia and pseudo-homosexual marriage.

What happens with democracy is the same as what happens with the stars of modern bullfighting: the fights only end well for them when they contend with bulls with cut horns; if it falls to them to fight a bull with full horns, they forget their posture, start to tremble, and end up being gored.

So it happened with the British referendum, which was a great bull thrown into the arena of democracy -- this charade that Money control at will while they provide it with bulls with cut horns, which they can fight with a stock-market panic here and a media distortion campaign there. But this referendum unearthed the inner ghosts of a Deep England which identified in the disgraceful European Union the humiliations suffered in its old age; and the old Englishman, fed up with being trampled upon, and with the most debasing derision being inflicted upon him (including a Mohammedan mayor in London!), decided to gore, in a dying gesture of bravery.

On 20th June, Holy Mass was said at the remains of Crossraguel Abbey, Ayrshire, Scotland. The celebrant was Fr Mark Morris of the Archdiocese of Glasgow. The Abbey was founded in the mid 13th century and was later sacked by an English Army. Rebuilt, its religious life was eventually brought to an end by the Scottish Reformation.

The army was stationed in a field called the New Park, in some parts low and marshy, and others dry, and rising with a gentle declivity. The small stream of Bannockburn issuing from the northwest, pursues a winding course towards the southeast, along the right sides and the front of this encampment. The banks of this stream were so rocky and steep, as to form a kind of natural entrenchment against the attack of the English cavalry.
