Rorate Caeli

Thank you, Virgin of Coromoto!

Congratulations to the small majority of the Venezuelan people who rejected the Constitutional reform proposed in August which would have established an official Socialist State in that nation - a development which had been quite predictable. Despite all the pressure of an almost-omnipotent government and the severe limitations of free speech in the Chávez regime, Venezuelans listened, among others, to the wise words of their Bishops, who repeatedly warned the people of the dangers of such a change - and were insulted and humiliated for it.

Pope Benedict reminded Catholics of the dangers of the Marxist State and of the fundamental error of Marxist "hopes" in his latest encyclical letter:

...Marx had spoken of the interim phase of the dictatorship of the proletariat as a necessity which in time would automatically become redundant. This “intermediate phase” we know all too well, and we also know how it then developed, not ushering in a perfect world, but leaving behind a trail of appalling destruction. Marx not only omitted to work out how this new world would be organized—which should, of course, have been unnecessary. His silence on this matter follows logically from his chosen approach. His error lay deeper. He forgot that man always remains man. He forgot man and he forgot man's freedom. He forgot that freedom always remains also freedom for evil. He forgot man and he forgot man's freedom. He forgot that freedom always remains also freedom for evil. He thought that once the economy had been put right, everything would automatically be put right. His real error is materialism: man, in fact, is not merely the product of economic conditions, and it is not possible to redeem him purely from the outside by creating a favourable economic environment. (Spe Salvi, 21)

The Bishops of Venezuela had asked for the protection of the Patron of that nation (the beautiful Virgin of Coromoto, who holds in her arms the King of the Universe) in their warnings against the Constitutional changes. She did not fail.

Virgen de Coromoto, pray for Venezuela! Pray for Latin America!

Once again Rorate Caeli proves itself the only Catholic blog whose writers do not worship at the idolatrous altars of modern ideologies. Yes! Thank you O Virgin of Coromoto for this victory against the forces of evil. And thank you Rorate Caeli for noting this.

Although I assist at a "Pauline" vernacular Mass, I have thought it fitting and worthwhile always to conclude by privately praying the Leonine prayers, not only for Russia's conversion, but for any and every nation endangered by Marxism-Leninism, Communism, Socialism, and Secularism. In recent days I have specifically been including the Venezuelan people as an intention, and I would like to thank Our Lady for hearing our prayers. May she soon effect the overthrow of the dictator Chavez and his Liberation Theology/ideology.

I certainly dislike and condemn communism and marxism. But they’re now dead.

The current great mistake, the present great enemy of the Church and of civilization is the system that we’ve got accustomed to calling capitalism; but this term defines the essence of this mistake very poorly. I believe that it should be called americanism: the specifically American ideology, of Calvinist origin.

It’s a long story. But people like Chávez, who are typical examples of demagogy and populism, are one of the many underproducts of americanism.

I’m happy to read that Chávez has been defeated. I hope history will finally defeat americanism, as it has defeated its two older brothers, fascism and communism.

Please don’t be offended: I’m not saying that Americans are bad. That would be stupid, of course! I’m just blaming a false ideology, the one that’s currently dominating the world. American catholics can do a lot to struggle against americanism, for the sake of truth and of their country, too.

Whoa there, harbinger of dead communism. Communists are alive and well but have infiltrated other movements, such as the Democrat Party here in America. Not to say the communist element is in charge of the Democrats, but they have a nice niche there amidst alliances with socialists and liberals. Socialists want full power over people and wealth, liberals want no authority but themselves, and communists will kill for power - a natural match. There is no shortage of those types in the world now or ever.
Capitalism is the opposite of socialism - individual economic freedom versus forced shared wealth. Capitalism is an economic system (not a moral system, although it has elements that affect morality) that works well when overlaid by the Catholic faith. Socialism and communism don't, so don't equate them with capitalism on a moral level.
The problem is the abdication of the Catholic Church in the battle for the minds and souls of the world since the 60s. That's the essence of it - America isn't the problem, the failure of the Catholic Church in America is. Americans are charitable to a fault - the church should be able to work well with such a people.

Socialism (even not communism!) is an evil bad for people and for economy. Notice that "welfare state" was even criticized by John Paul II in centessimus annus.

Joe is right. Do not be fooled! Communism is only a name used to seduce people into godlessness and atheism. For this reason it easily shifted away from the rhetoric of social revolution to the rhetoric of lifestyle revolution. Since its only aim is to gain solidarity for Satan's rebellion against God, it only needs a cause to induce an "us" against "them" attitude upon which it capitalizes. That is why the Catholic turned Marxist Louis Althusser invented a purely contentless structural Marxism which prepared the way for the New Left in the 60s. After the old materialist realist Marxism died, the New Left was able to morph into the life-style and Neo-Conservative movements we see today. Don't be tricked! The bitch that bore the Soviet Union and other assorted conmuunist regimes is still in heat!
