Equidem, Cardinalis Amplissime, in Musica arte, quam constat laudatissimam esse, iamdiu tuo fretus patrocinio ita versor, ut si voluntati par fuisset ingenium, non me (credo) laboris, operae diligentiaeq. meae peniteret. Nunc vero quoniam recte agentem nihil unquam frustrari aut fallere potest, decet me optima spe niti, cui nihil praeter Dei Opt. Max. gloriam, et communem hominum utilitatem propositum fuit, fore, ut hocmeum qualecunque studium optimo cuique maxime probetur. Interim vero, quasi specimem quoddam, aut pignus meae in te voluntatis pias quasdam Cantiones Musico artificio elaboratas (Motecta vulgo appellant) quas ad bonorum omnium, atque in primes huius scientiae studiosorum utilitatem aedere placuit, tuo nomini consecravi. Neq. sane iniuria. id enim, ut facerent, multa erant, quae suaderent. primum quod mei suscepto patrocinio nihil omnino eorum omittis, quae ad me augendum, atq. honestandum pertinere videantur. et me qui tibi semper fidelissimo benevolentiae, et observantiae vinculo fui obstrictus quae a te officia profecta sunt, et nunc maxime proficiscuntur quo animo, hoc est, quam libenti, quam grato excipiantur, aliquo item minime vulgari officiorum genere, tum ipsi tibi, tum caeteres omnibus testatum relinquere maxime decebat. Deinde Musicae Cantiones, et Cantiones piae, ad quem obsecro, potius mitti par fuit, quam ad eum, qui et cantu praecipue delectatur, et divinarum rerum studia in toto suae vitae cursu cunctos opibus, atq. honoribus anteposuit? cui vero meorum laborum primum hunc fructum magis, quam tibi persolvere aequum erat, a quo, ut id possem praestare, acceperam, et quicquid est in me huiusce cognitionis, si quid tamem est, aut etiam quodcunq. est profectum esse intelligo? Quare me quidem praeter caeteros tantum tibi debere fateor, quantum vix homini hominem debere fas sit. In cuius rei testimonium hos meos qualescunque labores, ingeniiq. primitias tuo potissimum inscriptas nomine, in publicam utilitatem aedere constitui. Quas si tibi probari cognovero, hoc tuo iudicio contentus aggrediar ad alia et quid caeteri de me vel sentiant vel loquantur, non laborabo. In interim quoniam iam hoc tribuisti humanitati tuae, ut me in tuam clientelam suscipies, tribue idem constantiae, ut susceptum tuearis, ac ornes. Vale.
