The most terrible conspiracy: that of silence

Roberto de Mattei

Since the eruption on the world stage of the coronavirus in January of 2020, the daily life of Western man has changed in unexpected ways. These changes in our lives are as radical as they are confusing and are raising disturbing questions about the ongoing pandemic.

Many speak of conspiracies, intrigues, plots connected to Covid-19 and to the vaccines for combating it, but the deafening uproar on these issues arouses suspicion.

The so-called anti-vax are convinced that there is a macro-conspiracy of occult forces for imposing a universal dictatorship. These theories are rampant on social media. The traditional mass media label these ideas as delusional, but instead of ignoring or excluding the anti-vaxxers they offer them the front pages of newspapers and television talk shows, enhancing their presence. The impression is that the interest of those who manipulate public opinion is to create artificial and distracting controversies, while the real problems are shrouded in a conspiracy of silence.

In his encyclical Divini Redemptoris of March 19 1937, Pope Pius XI stated that one powerful aid to the spread of communism was the “conspiracy of silence” of the world press. “We say conspiracy, because it is impossible otherwise to explain how a press usually so eager to exploit even the little daily incidents of life has been able to remain silent for so long about the horrors perpetrated in Russia, in Mexico and even in a great part of Spain; and that it should have relatively so little to say concerning a world organization as vast as Russian Communism. This silence is due in part to shortsighted political policy, and is favored by various occult forces which for a long time have been working for the overthrow of the Christian Social Order.”

How can one fail to take note that the same occult forces to which Pius XI referred are silent today on the responsibilities of Communist China in the spread of the coronavirus, but more generally on the domestic persecutions of the Xi Jinping regime and on its plan of economic and military world conquest? A Sino-communist plan for a “new world order” much more real than many pseudo-conspiracies, which serve only to sow confusion in the minds of Western man, psychologically weakened by a pandemic that shows no sign of dying down.

And how can one deny the existence of a conspiracy of silence on the crime of abortion, responsible for more than forty million deaths worldwide every year? A genocide perpetrated according to the law, against the most innocent of victims in the leading civilized countries, those that just gathered in Rome from October 20-21 for the G20 summit of 2021, interested in everything but the religious and moral problems on which the future of humanity depends.

According to one excellent commentary, while abortion is heinous its greatest crime is committed against not the physical but the spiritual life of these unborn children into whom God, at the moment of conception, has infused a soul and destined them for eternal glory. This greatest good is not a pale shadow in comparison with earthly life, which is limited and transitory. The gravity of abortion lies precisely in this: in forever depriving aborted creatures of the beatific vision of God, the supreme happiness for a human being (https://voiceofthefamily.com/why-is-abortion-the-worst-of-crimes/).

The most serious conspiracy, therefore, is not that against human rights, but that against the supreme rights of God. Paraphrasing what Dom Prosper Guéranger states in his classic work on The Meaning of History, we must reiterate that any ideology, any cultural or political vision that ignores the supernatural order is a false system that explains nothing and leaves the history of humanity in chaos and permanent contradiction. The Christian, in fact, judges events, ideas, men, from God’s point of view, in every circumstance, without ever forgetting that natural disasters, wars, and social upheavals are often a consequence of the public sins of society, which cheats God of the glory due to him.

The Church should recall this every day: all the evils of humanity have their origin in sin; public sin is more serious than that of individuals, and God punishes social sins with the scourges of epidemics, wars, economic crises, and natural disasters. If the world does not repent, and above all if the men of the Church are silent, the punishments that are at first inflicted in a mild way are destined to become ever more severe, amounting even to the annihilation of entire nations. The message of Fatima announced this as an irreversible destiny.

The silence on this message and on the action of Divine Providence in history is the most terrible conspiracy to which man today can fall victim.
