Coronavirus Prayer

What can we do, in addition to washing our hands and taking prudent measures to avoid contracting or spreading the coronavirus?  PRAY.

Here is one idea.  Ask your parish schola to chant this prayer in a time of pestilence on Sunday.  Imagine if hundreds, if not thousands, of churches around the world took a few minutes to pray for the end of the coronavirus.

The Star of Heaven that nourished the Lord drove away the plague of death which the first parents of man brought into the world.  May this bright Star now vouchsafe to extinguish that foul constellation whose battles have slain the people with the wound of death.

O most pious Star of the Sea, preserve us from pestilence; hear us, O Lady, for Thy Son honors Thee by denying Thee nothing.  Save us, O Jesus, for whom Thy Virgin Mother supplicates Thee.

Call to Prayers and Sacrifices for Mexico and Puerto Rico

May the Virgin of Guadalupe, Patroness of Mexico and the Americas, and Saint John the Baptist, Patron of Puerto Rico, intercede for the suffering people of these dear lands in their moment of natural tragedy and suffering.

We ask our readers, as much as they can and are spiritually allowed to, to offer up prayers and sacrifices for the souls of the deceased, for their families, for the consolation and healing of the injured, and for those who have lost or will lose their homes and their livelihood.

Cardinal Sarah attends the funeral of young Traditional Catholic brother to whom he dedicated God or Nothing

Robert Cardinal Sarah dedicated his book God or Nothing to a Msgr. Louis Barry and to "Brother Vincent, and to all those who take turns without a break at his bedside". Msgr. Barry was Cardinal Sarah's countryman from Guinea, who endured much for the Church during the dictatorship of Ahmed Sékou Touré and who died last year at the age of 93. (More on him here.) As for Brother Vincent -- Vincent Mary of the Resurrection -- he was a brother of the "Lagrasse Canons" or the Canons Regular of the Mother of God, one of the French monastic congregations dedicated to worshiping God exclusively through the Traditional Latin liturgy. 

Cardinal Sarah's dedication gently alludes to Brother Vincent's battle with multiple sclerosis, which finally claimed his life at the age of 39 on April 10, Good Shepherd Sunday according to the traditional liturgical calendar. A few minutes before he died, his Abbot gave him the last sacraments in the presence of his mother, sister and fellow Canons.

Say a prayer for Justice Scalia

Over the past decade, this contributor has had the great honor of speaking with Justice Antonin Scalia on a number of occasions, each one memorable. He always had the time for my family and me and always offered his time, kindness, humor and wisdom. His words have lasted with us for years and will never fade. 

He loved his country, his family and the traditional Latin Mass. And we loved him. 

Please take a moment and pray for the repose of his soul. Say a rosary for him. Offer your Sunday Mass intention for him. And, please dear Fathers of the Rorate Caeli Purgatorial Society, say a Mass for him as well. 

Our Blessed Mother and St. Thomas More, intercede for him.

In solidarity with our Persecuted Brethren in Iraq and Syria

As we announced last week, Friday will be a Day of Adoration and Prayer around the world for the persecuted Christians of Iraq, Syria, and the Middle East. We know that it has spread from the Fraternity of Saint Peter (FSSP) to a great number of churches around the world. Please, try to take part in one of the many public acts of intercession for the safety of our brothers expelled from their homes and cities, maimed, and for consolation for the families of the many martyrs.

A CALL TO PRAYER on behalf of the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Immaculate

Regardless of your opinion on specific Church matters, please spread as widely as possible this appeal to prayer for justice and peace regarding the recently initiated visitation (with intervention tones) of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate decided by the Congregation for Religious.

After hearing the news about the appointment of a visitator to the Institute of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate, we are more than ever convinced that these days being Catholic is a problem for some Vatican authorities. We have decided (at least for the time being) to suspend any comment or publication whatever related to this incredible and disconcerting affair: let this be a time of prayer and staying spiritually close to the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate. 

 For this reason, we are launching a Rosary Crusade appeal, requesting the help of everyone who intends to support the Fathers, Brothers and Sisters who are being hit and persecuted so unjustly, through the recitation of at least a decade of the Rosary every day, dedicated to the Franciscans of the Immaculate.

A call to prayer for the Philippines (updated)

Update: As of December 13, 2:00 A.M. in Manila, the Philippine House of Representatives has voted in favor of the "Reproductive Health Bill". 

Rorate requests your Masses, prayers and mortifications for the intentions of our Filipino Catholic brethren.  The Philippines, with some 75 million Catholics, is the country with the third largest Catholic population in the whole world.

The following note comes from our Filipino Catholic friends: 

Today, December 12, Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Patroness of the Unborn, the Philippine House of Representatives is poised to vote on the "Reproductive Health Bill". Despite the opposition of the Catholic hierarchy, the proposed law has the overwhelming support of the mainstream Philippine media and of the government, and not least of the United Nations. Academics and activists from universities run by the Jesuits and the De La Salle Brothers have also been at the forefront of pushing for this bill. Despite the typhoon that hit the southern Philippines last week, killing hundreds if not thousands of people, the Philippine media and Congress have continued to focus on the "importance" of passing this bill. 

The "Reproductive Health Bill" is like an omnibus law for the propagation of immorality and the destruction of the family. Aside from allocating a significant portion of this country's budget to the purchase of contraceptives (to which adolescents will be expressly entitled) and introducing Western-style sex education into the curriculum for students between the ages of 11 and 16 (specifically including the teaching of 'family planning methods'), this bill also introduces language that will greatly weaken the anti-abortion laws of the Philippines, while enshrining the very principle of "reproductive health" in its legislation. Curiously, the bill declares that "reproductive health rights" includes the right not just of married couples but of individuals to have and to raise children. In a country already awash in pornography, where condoms and, at times, even abortifacient contraceptives can be bought over the counter, the effect that the RH bill will have on the further moral degeneration of the Filipino youth can scarcely be calculated.
