The decision to not publish the texts of the speeches of those participating in the Synod on the Family is certainly not having a positive effect on clarity of information, and is contributing to a situation that is, so to speak, mystifying. The general public, including both Catholics and non-Catholics., are not being informed in a clear and thorough way. All we can say is that after the first three days, in which more than one hundred speeches have been made, a picture of what is going on appears anything but clear.

Latest papal interview: Francis enjoys debating conservative bishops
Another interview of Pope Francis has been published, this time by La Nacion in Argentina.
As translated and reported by John-Henry Westen of Life Site News, the pope continued his theme from an earlier interview that he has "never been a right-winger" by noting he enjoys debating "very conservative" bishops.
In an interview with the pope, published October 5, reporter Joaquín Morales Solá at Argentina’s La Nacion newspaper asked if he was “worried” about the recent book by five cardinals opposing Kasper’s proposal, titled Remaining in the Truth of Christ: Marriage and Communion in the Catholic Church. Morales Solá said to the pope that the book is “critical of your positions.”
Francis “doesn’t answer” the question directly, according to Morales Solá, but says, “Everyone has something to contribute. I even enjoy debating with the very conservative, but intellectually well-formed bishops.”

The Synod that has just begun will not go down in history for its documents but for the importance that has been attached to the event itself: i.e., a “laceration” in traditional morality, encapsulated with the formula “the primacy of pastoral practice over doctrine”. This thesis is sustained in deliberately misleading historical and theological articles, like the one by the Jesuit Giancarlo Pani which appeared on the eve of the Synod in the “Civiltà Cattolica” carrying the title “Matrimony and second marriages at the Council of Trent (Quaderno, n.3943, October 4th 2014). In this essay the author summons up the history of “one of the most innovative decrees from the Council of Trent on matrimony, known as “Tametsi” , asserting that in the 7th Canon of the document, the Church while condemning the doctrine of Luther and the reformers, “leaves uncriticized the traditions of the Greeks who, in the case specified, tolerate new marriages.”

The Use of Latin in Church Documents Is Not an Exercise in Preciosity
No more "propositiones". No more "relationes". No more anything. Latin will not be around, not even to ensure the precision of formulas and the exactness of final deliberations (and, presumably, the final report), unlike in any other of the previous assemblies of the Synod of Bishops.

For the first time since the liturgical reforms of the early 1970's, the Sacrament of Confirmation was conferred in Colombia by a member of that country's hierarchy. The Confirmations took place on October 4 at the Espíritu Santo church in Bogotá and were conferred by Bishop Medardo de Jesús Henao del Río (born 1967 and consecrated to the episcopate only this year), who is the Vicar Apostolic of Mitú. The Confirmations were followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

The upcoming Synod of Bishops has been preceded by a rumpus in the media which attaches to it a historical significance greater than its ecclesiastical importance as merely a consultative assembly in the Church. Some are complaining about the theological war the Synod promises to be, but the history of all the Episcopal meetings in the Church (such is the etymological significance of the term “synod” and its synonym “council”) has been made up of theological conflicts and bitter debates on errors and divisions that have threatened the Christian community since its beginnings.

The Italian Traditional Catholic blog, Cordialiter, could never be accused of not supporting or understanding the Catholic Tradition and what it means for us today. Its “banner” is a quote from Saint Pius X, from his Apostolic Letter “Nôtre Charge Apostolique”: “The true friends of the people are not the revolutionaries nor the innovators, but the traditionalists.” A recent post apparently caused quite a reaction from the readers of the blog, so much so that the author felt the need to issue a clarification. I think important issues are raised in the post and the clarification. My translation of the post and the clarification from Italian is as follows. My comments are below.

10-year anniversary of the death of a legend
Today marks the 10-year anniversary of the death of Michael Davies. For those who have been in the traditional movement for decades, this legend of the fight for restoration needs no introduction. For those who are new to tradition, you may have no idea what this man means for you today, unless you read an account of his life and tireless work on behalf of the Church.

In the latest issue of Communio, the theological journal founded by Joseph Ratzinger, Hans Urs von Balthasar and Henri de Lubac, two Cardinals of the Church, whose theological credentials are well-known, directly counter the position of Cardinal Kasper with respect to Catholic teaching on marriage and pastoral practice dealing with the question of reception of Holy Communion by those divorced and remarried. Both articles can be downloaded from the Communio site. Ouellet and Scola join the strong chorus of support for the Church’s traditional teaching on Marriage and her pastoral practice, among which we can cite as fine examples the Dominican theologians’ response in Nova et Vetera and the collection of essays, Remaining in the Truth of Christ, about to be published by Ignatius Press.
