Day 39 - Thursday after Ash Wednesday - Saint George in Velabrum

"The Church of S. George in Velabrum is not very dissimilar to S. Sabina and S. Mary in Cosmedin.

"The origins of the temple are much earlier than the 6th century. ...S. Gregory II instituted it as a Lenten Station. Leo XII joined the patronage of S. Sebastian to that of S. George and another Gregory, the fourth of that name, gifted it with mosaics and porticos; in 1325, Giotto frescoed the apse."

A soldierly chapel, dedicated to brave soldiers, George and Sebastian, as also is the Gospel of the day (St. Matthew viii, 5-13). In the spirit of the ancient Roman churches, we link to this article by Fr. Ignacio Barreiro, on the prospects for the current pontificate: Tidings of Comfort and Joy.
