From the Closing Liturgy of the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress 2010

The R.E. Congress (more on it here) -- which had a turnout of some 40,000 -- had its own Youtube channel as well, full of similar videos.

One wonders what the Byzantine-Rite Catholic bishops concelebrating the Mass might have been thinking...

This animistic worship-like procession is evidence of the inherent ambiguity of the Novus-Ordo Missae. No matter how reverent it is 'possible' to offer this Mass, messes like this are still possible if not probable! My fellow trads, before our eyes we have tangible proof of the innate superiority of the TLM.

I am certain that a collective sign emanates from all who watch this video, and anger creeps in as we think of the damage Mahoney has done to the Catholic faith in Los Angeles.

As for the Byzantine priests present. Either they were forced to attend or they are conspiring with the progressives to change their own Rite in the future. If the latter is true, I hope the Orthodox Church is watching very closely. You may as well call all forms of unity off. If the latter is true!.

Pope Benedict's still got a lot of purging to do. These old liberals are going to hold onto their power for some time to come.

Yes, Byzantine Rite clergy going along with such shenanigans is intolerable. Many Byzantine Catholics are Novus Ordo in different garb (most of their young move away and marry out of it... into the NO) and some are tweaking their services even further in that direction ('Revised Divine Liturgy', altar girls).

The fourth Anonymous: a Pope did promulgate the actual NO, whose actual text in Latin (not paraphrases) is not a problem even if you don't like the simplifications. That doesn't mean the NO is perfect, ideal or above criticism.

I watched with the sound muted, and thought things were looking up until 2/3rds in, I noticed all the clergy beginning to clap. What dat?

That Mass had the very real possibility of being invalid, either in form, matter, or intention. Can anyone with a straight face say those clerics intend what the Church intends?

That is the scary thing about the Novus Ordo, we have no clue which Novus Ordo Mass is valid and which is not anymore. You can have an orthodox Catholic priest offer a valid Novus ordo Mass in one parish and in the next parish across town, the Novus Ordo Mass is invalid because the priest doesn't believe in transubstantiation.

No Catholic is required to believe in the Novus Ordo and we can call and work for its repeal. the Novus Ordo Mass was a purely prudential decision of Paul VI done out of governance that in no way infallible or even protected from errror. In fact, Trads do call the Missal of Paul VI an error. The Church has always had the TLM which was never abrogated. It has always remained and will always remain the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church.

Ah, but on the Church's side of the Tiber may be found humility, purity, peace, and life in Our Lord Jesus Christ and the One, True, Holy, Apostolic, and Catholic Church He founded.

Yes, sin, the enemies of God, and the smoke of Satan have entered the Church and are busy ripping Her apart - all the more reason to "cross the Tiber" and join in the battle of prayer to help purify and restore the Church.

Magister Christianus,

Fear not to cross over, friend. Indeed, to be shocked by video such as this is a healthy thing still, a beautiful sign of life still, here in exile. You may see worse than this once you are safe in the Ark, but feed your interior life with the grace of the immemorial Roman Mass, and you will have no fear. Innumerable things we can neither understand nor explain in this life, and the deviation shown in this video is assuredly among them, but we know Whom we have believed, and He is faithful to keep that which we commit unto Him. I too am a convert, and abysmally poor catechesis necessitated my discovering the heart of the Church in and through the traditional Latin Mass. It's been sixteen years since I've had to witness the self-loathing on display in this film clip, God be praised. I was moved by your comments, Magister Christianus. I and many others here, I'm sure, will pray for you, as we do for ourselves. Be not afriad, friend. Let no taste of suffering obscure for us the Light on the other side of the degredation of this Los Angeles Religious Education Congress party. All-Holy Mother of God, give us strength, patience, and perseverance.

@St. Raphael,

the Novus Ordo Mass is invalid because the priest doesn't believe in transubstantiation.

It isn't necessary for the priest to believe in transsubstantiation for the Sacrament to be confected. It is only necessary that he intends to do what the Church does, or the equivalent, such as what Christ instituted.

Quote: "Saddening. This Mass was a purposeful and direct smack in the face to the Vatican and Catholic Liturgy. The Archdiocese chose to celebrate the closing liturgy of its big RE conference illicitly.

For starters, the sacred vessels were glass and wicker.

Yet, Instruction Redemptionis Sacramentum explicitly states that,

""Reprobated, therefore, is any practice of using for the celebration of Mass common vessels, or others lacking in quality, or devoid of all artistic merit or which are mere containers, as also other vessels made from glass, earthenware, clay, or other materials that break easily."

A Pope promulgated the Novus Ordo. Don't Catholics have to accept it?"
NO Pope promulgated Novus Ordo. It was done in a pseudo-comission years after Second Vatican Council. It's not the Missal of Paul VI, it's the Missal of Bugnini. They did all this when the Pope was ill. Sacrosantum Concilium mentions none of what these people are doing. All the stuff in that video is illegal in Canon Law and the GIRM. NO wonder everybody is going to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, the way it should be.
In October 1967, the Episcopal Synod called in Rome was required to pass judgement on the experimental celebration of a so-called "normative Mass" (New Mass), devised by the Consilium ad exsequendam Constitutionem de Sacra Liturgia. This Mass aroused the most serious misgivings. The voting showed considerable opposition (43 non placet), very many substantial reservations (62 juxta modum), and 4 abstentions out of 187 voters. The international press spoke of a "refusal" of the proposed "normative Mass" (New Mass) on the part of the Synod. Progressively-inclined papers made no mention of it. In the Novus Ordo Missae lately promulgated by the Apostolic Constitution Missale Romanum, we once again find this "normative Mass" (New Mass), identical in substance, nor does it appear that in the intervening period the Episcopal Conference, at least as such, were ever asked to give their views about it.Since the "normative" Mass (New Mass), now reintroduced and imposed as the Novus Ordo Missae (New Order of the Mass), was in substance rejected by the Synod of Bishops, was never submitted to the collegial judgement of the Episcopal Conferences, nor have the people - least of all in mission lands - ever asked for any reform of Holy Mass whatsoever, one fails to comprehend the motives behind the new legislation which overthrows a tradition unchanged in the Church since the 4th and 5th centuries, as the Apostolic Constitution itself acknowledges. As no popular demand exists to support this reform, it appears devoid of any logical grounds to justify it and makes it acceptable to the Catholic people. So, The Traditional Latin Mass was the exclusive form celebrated during the Second Vatican Council. As a matter of fact, most of the changes that have been introduced by the 1960's liturgical reform took place in the years after the Second Vatican Council. The Council itself never abolished the traditional liturgy, and its famous document about the Liturgy of the Church, "Sacrosanctum Concillium," mentions only the possibility of some adaptations but never called for the change of language nor the rite of the Holy Mass as a whole. It is, therefore, very desirable that all the faithful should know the traditional liturgy and should be able to understand its significance and its importance for the future of Holy Mother Church.

Vaticano,
How can it be what you say? Isn't the novus ordo the "Official" or "Ordinary" rite of the Roman Church? Isn't it also called "The Mass of Pope Paul VI"? And was it not formally proclaimed by the appropriate offices, all ultimately authorized by the Pope? It was all so public, and embraced by so many bishops from the Pope on down, and then so adopted so quickly by so many, that the whole movement was much more, and much deeper, than the behind the scenes machinations you describe. If what you say is true, what does that say about how easily the NO was so heartily embraced by so many?

Unfortunately it has become too timid to exercise this cherished authority and what is left is a depressing free for all. Just look at the vapid bishops in this video and fasten your seat belts. Vaticano,
It's a rather interesting turn when Vatican II is referenced as a bulwark against the Novus Ordo, but it's pointless. The Supreme Pontiff can act without a council, according to Roman doctrine. One Pope promulgated the Novus Ordo, right? And successive Popes have allowed for things like this liturgy in LA. Focusing on the details of a commission is perhaps interesting and maybe even true, but not relevant. Is not the more relevant truth that the very existence of the Novus Ordo arises from a Pope?

Mike, Our Lord permits these abominations to test the faith of his servants. Don't fail him. Cling to our Blessed Mother and she will be your salvation in these times of general apostasy. Remember: Our Lord is testing you!

Vaticano,

The populous did not ask for a new Mass, quite true. Yes, it was foisted upon them, but now, how to put the toothpaste back into the tube? People now happen to like the protestant form of worship. I still keep tabs on my old parish, and that's just the way it is. Most there are not receptive to the old Mass. They love the creativity, activity, warm-fuzzies of the N.O. - just like in this youtube. The poor people don't even realize they are no longer Catholic.

Those of us who are upset and mortified by these liturgical excesses/sacrileges are on a path to Calvary with Our Lord this week. Let us remember that Our Lord was abandoned by his disciples and even his appointed head, Peter, disowned him three times publicly.

None of the apostles except John witnessed the Crucifixion as they hid for fear of the Jews. Is the appointed Head disowning Him again by not acting to remove those responsible for these atrocities and mandating a return to the Traditional Liturgy? It's an open question, my friends.

Words are not going to resolve this crisis in the Church. Only firm, resolute action to remove the perpetrators will restore confidence that the Papacy is in good hands. So, this week let us pray that His Holiness will see the Light and do what is necessary to remove this cancer from the Body of Christ.

There can be no greater issue than the liturgy and the infallible doctrines that used to nourish this in The Latin Mass of All Time until the NO service of Bugnini appeared and tilted the authentic lex supplicandi away from the lex credendi. There is no way back for a church that has tried to deny its past for a novel & transient present. All other current issues take their roots in this one salient and overriding one. The postmodernist approach to liturgy reflects the chaos in an undisciplined, decentralised and pastorally liberal modernist church.
