"Pattern?" - we asked last year. Yes, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith could detect a pattern in Mr. Bourgeois's behavior. From the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers (source: NCRonline):

The Congregation For The Doctrine Of The Faith Canonically Dismisses Roy Bourgeois

Maryknoll, New York – November 19, 2012 – The Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, on October 4, 2012, canonically dismissed Roy Bourgeois from the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America, also known as the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers. The decision dispenses the Maryknoll priest from his sacred bonds.

As a priest during 2008, Mr. Bourgeois participated in the invalid ordination of a woman and a simulated Mass in Lexington, Kentucky. With patience, the Holy See and the Maryknoll Society have encouraged his reconciliation with the Catholic Church.

Instead, Mr. Bourgeois chose to campaign against the teachings of the Catholic Church in secular and non-Catholic venues. This was done without the permission of the local U.S. Catholic Bishops and while ignoring the sensitivities of the faithful across the country. Disobedience and preaching against the teaching of the Catholic Church about women’s ordination led to his excommunication, dismissal and laicization.

Mr. Bourgeois freely chose his views and actions, and all the members of the Maryknoll Society are saddened at the failure of reconciliation. With this parting, the Maryknoll Society warmly thanks Roy Bourgeois for his service to mission and all members wish him well in his personal life. In the spirit of equity and charity, Maryknoll will assist Mr. Bourgeois with this transition.

I understand dismissal from his order, but laicization? Is there any
precedent for laicizing a cleric
because they disagree with Church teaching? It seems a bit like swatting a fly with a cannonball.

Please, do not post simply as "anonymous" again.

We do not know the details of the procedure, which certainly would explain why specific measures were taken. But in a nation and a Church filled with dissenters, few have been as stubbornly disobedient as Mr. Bourgeois, who excluded himself first from Apostolic Tradition.

Mons Lefebvre was excomunicated 3 days after the episcopal consecrations and now this priests is excomunicated 4 YEARS after his participacion in a pseudo women priest ordination.

"Mons Lefebvre was excomunicated 3 days after the episcopal consecrations"

John Paul II didn't excommunicate him, but simply pronounced him excommunicated.

Dear Antonana,

Why is Mons. Lefebvre and the SSPX the essential reference point for all issues in the Catholic Church for people like you? They have nothing to do with this matter. Think about your answer. If you need an essential reference point, try the Sermon on the Mount, the Ressurection, or some other great truth of our Faith.

Antoñana,

The Holy See does tend to announce such things quicker when it comes to bishops illicitly ordaining other bishops. It announced the excommunication of Joseph Yue Fusheng four days after his illicit ordination in China in July.

That being said, Bourgeios' excommunication seems to have come about three months later, not four years. According to this article, the excommunication of Bourgious was confirmed by the CDF back in November 2008. They had given him a 30 day period to recant, before confirming it.

This latest decree laicizes him (which never happened to Lefebrve as far as I know).

The Maryknolls of today are in the Rahnerist, McBrienist *mold.* One wonders how much the Maryknolls tried to get this guy to rachet down his nonsense. Like RC said, we don't know the details and the specifics are none of our business. In a way I don't feel sorry for him. He kept carrying on with his recidivist behavior. Yeah, that's showing Rome.

It took an inordinately long time to deal with this man's constant attack on the Church and her priesthood.

It took them long enough, but good riddance Mr. Bourgeois. It's the end for the Maryknoll Order too....priests & brothers, and the Sisters as well. Both Orders are filled with like minded people. TYhere have not been more than 10 Maryknoll seminarians for 40 years.....before Vatican II, over 500!

Average age of Maryknoll priests/brothers..73

Of Sisters...close to 80!!

They're done.
Maybe the LCWR will be next.

**The reason why the Vatican went after the late, great Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre so quickly is that at the time, Vatican II was still very much heralded as "The New Springtime" etc....and Archbishop Lefebvre was discrediting this view.

Now with all the priest/pedophile cases around the world after Vatican II, the abuses, the dissent, the rot etc. the rallying cry to defend Vatican II (while still there among some in power), rings alittle hollow. Noone who is serious about the Catholic Church today would give blanket praise and approval to Vatican II and all that came from it (except those who were there)

I am a little confused with this last bit. {With this parting, the Maryknoll Society warmly thanks Roy Bourgeois for his service to mission and all members wish him well in his personal life. In the spirit of equity and charity, Maryknoll will assist Mr. Bourgeois with this transition.}

He must be a grave danger to souls, Yes? or why the severity by Rome.

Seems to me you would stay far from this danger.

Good point, Fred - why are those people so preoccupied with traditional Catholics? We don't pose any kind of threat to others. Maybe after all, the devil does know his own.

Imagine the damage individuals such as Mr Bourgeois cause within their sphere of influence, and the higher they climb the damage done to others' mindsets is exponential.

The best way I see how to combat this kind of folk is first and above all to pray to Our Lady the Refuge of Sinners. Secondly, it is absolutely essential and indispensable to know our faith, Holy Scripture, and to be well-versed in other important issues, especially politics, which have a direct impact on us.

It is sad that this man failed in his duty of state. Some article appears to be deliberately provocative and to be a non-issue in order to divert our attention and to sow division.

YES...he is a grave danger to souls. But you should't be surprised by the support he got from his former Order, Maryknoll. Because believe it or not, most of the 325+ aged priests that are left in the Order and the 70+ brothers actually support Bourgeois...not the Vatican.

Now we'll probably hear the LCWR whining their support for Bourgeois too. Who knows, maybe he can come work for them. They're not really Catholics either, so he'd feel right at home!

True. It is yet to be seen whether these great champions of *social justice* will support him just with the running of their mouths or the opening of their wallets. Remember, when it comes to social justice liberals, it's all their hot air and other people's money they love to squander.

Time to stick a fork in the Maryknolls, they're done, too far gone and lefty.

They did product Fr. (saint imo) Capadanno but he obviously was nothing like this excommunicated heretic.

A superb title for this article, by the way.

It may interest Bourgeois and readers of this blog that the laity scuppered plans to have female bishops in the Church of England.

This is the problem - Maryknoll. Have they accepted responsibility for their poor oversight here, and the resulting scandal? Have they announced public Masses and Acts of Reparation for the damage caused and the souls their heretic led away from the faith and the truth? Exactly.

I thought Bourgeois was laicized, not excommunicated? There is big diff between being kicked out of the priesthood and out of the Church. Which is it?

Good Riddance!
I take from the parting words of the Maryknolls is that Bourgeois will probably receive a retirement stipend to "assist Mr. Bourgeois with this transition".

Remember that the Maryknolls couldn't come to a decision on his expulsion for quite a long time...part of the reason why there was such a delay and behind the scenes pressure was put on them to close the sale.
