The Holy Father named today his personal secretary, Monsignor Georg Gänswein, as Prefect of the Papal Household (and titular Archbishop). The Archbishop-elect retains his secretarial position as the closest and most trusted personal collaborator of the Pope.

Would either of those positions now occupied by Abp.-elect Ganswein preclude him from receiving a red hat while remaining in them?
Archbishop elect? He wasn't elected. There must be a better way of phrasing this. The "newly nominated" archbishop. Has been "nominated archbishop". He has been "named" not "elected". He has been selected and appointed, NOT elected. If already a bishop he will not be consecrated bishop.
'Elected' means 'chosen'. It has no democratic implication. He's been chosen by the Holy Father. The 'elect' in the New Testament are those chosen by God.
As far as electors are concerned, it's quality not quantity that counts.
Archbishop or Bishop elect is a very common phrase, nothing to do with an actual election.
Archbishop Ganswein has been working closely with the Pope for many years. He is young, charming, plays tennis, and looks like a million bucks. I think Benedict is getting prepared for the long haul. Centanni.
Honestly...
This is great news and a nice show of gratitude to Ganswein. Talk about a great leap forward.
Down the line, I wonder which diocese he'll get, if at all. Keep in mind, we don't know what his theological mindset set is as he's been administrative almost all of his priestly life.
Anyway, Ad Multos Annos to him and our Holy Father.
He's probably not a liberal as was Harvey, his predecessor as prefect of the Pontifical Household and who was promoted/demoted to Cardinal and Archpriest of Saint Paul Outside the Walls...A truely invisible posting.

Totally agree!
Congratulations Monsignor Ganswein!
Matt, the Archbishop-elect is a longstanding close collaborator of the Holy Father. I think that that's probably a pretty good sign as to his theological standpoint.
" He is young, charming, plays tennis, and looks like a million bucks."
Sure, because that's how our Lord taught us to judge folk.
Personally have huge lingering doubts about the Holy Father's inner circle based on this whole butler document stealing incident.
The only one in the Holy Father's inner circle whom I have complete trust in is Fr. Georg Ratzinger. May the good Lord preserve him.
Anybody else see this? http://vaticaninsider.lastampa.it/en/the-vatican/detail/articolo/stati-uniti-united-states-estados-unidos-20429/
Rumor is that it should be announced soon that Bishop Olmsted will replace Tobin as the Secretary of Congregation for Consecrated Life.
If true, this will be a great addition to the Curia and for the Universal Church.
I however will be sad to lose a great Bishop here in the Diocese of Phoenix.
The LCWR will surely have a hissy fit.
Olmsted? Man...that would really send the Not so Catholic Reporter and the LCWR into a tizzy.
