Archbishop Pozzo back to PCED

Pope Francis today re-appointed Archbishop Guido Pozzo as Secretary of the Pontifical Commission "Ecclesia Dei". This was the position he occupied from July 8, 2009 until November 3, 2012 when he was appointed Almoner to His Holiness

Replacing Archbishop Pozzo as the Almoner to His Holiness is the Msgr. Konrad Krajewski, one of the Papal Masters of Ceremonies, who is also made Titular Archbishop of Benevento.

    No one can say Papa Francis ain't interested in the old liturgy! This is in effect his first move in the Curial shake-up.

    Note that this would have been an opportunity to promote Guido Marini out of office, but wasn't taken; rather his junior colleague got it.

  5. This news story is encouraging about Archbishop Pozzo:

    "Two of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer, an order with the Redemptorist charism inspired by St Alphonsus Ligouri, based on Papa Stronsay in the Orkneys, were ordained in Rome on Saturday 22nd June, by Archbishop Pozzo, an official of the Roman Curia. The ordinations took place in the Traditional Rite, and the order is exclusively devoted to this rite".

    So what is it? Is this good news or bad for Tradition?

    It depends. If you would like to see the lion's share of SSPX reconciled with Rome, then it is very good news. Period.

    The pope has appointed a lover of tradition who has already reconciled some SSPX--like the group mentioned in the above comment, as his Holiness' representative to negotiate with the SSPX. This could be very bad news to anyone who is a dyspeptic dog-in-a-manger type who rejoices in pessimism and neener-neenerism and know-allism. Which I am sure you are not!!

  9. This is mildly good news. The fact that Pope Francis is naming anyone at all to be Secretary of the Commission means that he is accepting the Commission's work in some form. Notice that he has not rid it of its Vice-President.

    Msgr. Pozzo himself was a mixed bag for us. It was while he was there that the P.C.E.D. changed policy so that it 'limited itself' by not answering if Society Masses fulfil the Sunday obligation. Msgr. Camille Perl, the previous Secretary, had said that they do.

    Universæ Ecclesiæ was largely the work of Msgr. Pozzo. While some here bitched and complained about three of its clauses, all the others were good and, as I argued at the time, the document overall improved our situation. In particular, it made it clear that a 'group' can be as few as two persons ("some"), that 'stable' only need mean stability in an intention to worship the Latin Mass, that all post-1962 written laws pertaining to our Mass were null; and that the P.C.E.D. becomes the hierarchical superior over the bishops in cases of disputes.

    I will not be jumping for joy over this one but nor is it bad news. Overall? Mildly good.

    But there is reason for celebration today. The Diocese of Hradec Králové, in the Czech Republic, now has an every-Sunday T.L.M. It's listed in WikiMissa. That means that Czechland becomes the very first plural-diocese country in the world to have at least one every-Su. Traditional Latin Mass in each of its dioceses. All eight Czech Dioceses have them, as follows:

    Prague, A.: 2 (1 in the Dominican Rite);

    Olomouc, A., 1;

    Litomerice: 3 (Thank you, Bishop of L., for being the first to help our cause);

    Budweis: 1;

    Pilsen: 2;

    Brno: 3;

    Ostrava-Opava: 1;

    Hradec Králové: 1.

    In addition, each Diocese has other T.L.M.s on other bases. The Traditional Latin Mass (not some bloody 'extraordinary anything') is offered every day of the week in the Archdiocese of Prague and in the Dioceses of Litomerice (except Tuesdays), Budweis and Pilsen.

    Before S.P., only Litomerice had the T.L.M. each Sunday. before this century dawned on 1 January, 2001 (and not on 1 January, 2000), there were none at all. The Czech Republic has come out of nowhwere and surpassed our strongest Latin Mass countries, Austria, Switzerland (in the past), Belgium and New Zealand (and latterly England too).

    Congratulations to Czech traditionalists. Well done! And this last one came under Pope Francis too, as has the recently one in Port Elisabeth, South Africa.

    With all these impressive improvements in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Belarus and Estonia, and in Sweden, I wonder if Catholic bishops in Portugal and Malta will actually do something?

  12. Fortunately, our Blessed Lord took time off work in Heaven and inspired Pope Francis to remove that skunk, Cardinal Policarpo, Patriarch of Lisbon. Good riddance! He was also the last Pauline bishop in Portugal (i.e. consecrated bishop under Pope Paul VI). There are only thirty of them left in the world, twelve of whom are in Africa.

    It was Policarpo who convinced other Portugese bishop to 'just say no' to "Summorum Pontificum". What we need now are Portugese priests who 'just say no' to Policarpo as they wheel him to a precipice in his bath chair. I'm told that he actually went to local bishops and wept, imploring them not to allow the evil Latin Mass. What charity he had. It just broke his great heart to see faithful praying the Mass of their ancestors as if it were black magic, witchcraft or paganism. What can't these people just leave us alone? We're not threat to them. The only threat to the New Mass is the New Mass.

    Let's not read more into this than what it's worth. On it's face it sounds good. It's only as time goes on and we see what comes out of Ecclesia Dei shall we see things for what they are. Remember, Pozzo can do only what Bergoglio tells him, not that Pozzo decides things on his own.


  15. Archbishop Guido Pozzo sounds like good news, or maybe bad news. What is good news, or maybe bad news is that Pope Francis now recognizes we Traditionalists exist. What could be the intentions of the Pope? Could he be thinking Christian Unity, or could he be thinking of striking us with a final fatal blow? If his Holiness is serious in a positive way, then why not have Malcom Cardinal Ranjith head the whole Ecclesia Dei Commision, and removing Mueller and the influence of Levada completely out of the way. I still can't understand why Pope Benedict XVl would place modernist heretics to oversee the spiritual well being of Traditionalists.

  16. According to his WorldCat Identities page, Guido Pozzo has written a few books, his most popular being Magistero e teologia in H. Küng e P. Schoonenberg: problemi e riflessioni. He also wrote Costituzione dogmatica sulla chiesa Lumen gentium.

  17. To examine the new Pope's attitude to the trad. Mass precise details of what he did or didn't do after Summorum Pontifcum are vital.
    Otherwise while it is often pleasing to read of a regular Sunday trad. rite Mass in various places there should not be euphoria over merely an occasional Mass.
    What is needed is the proliferation of traditional Mass communities which have daily Mass.

  18. Good news or bad news? I don't know. It certainly could have been worse, but we shouldn't say this marks a turns or confirms one position over another.

    As Archbishop Chaput of Philidelphia noted to John Allen, conservatives and traditionalists haven't been happy with anything done by Francis so maybe this is meant to cool the criticism, especially after WYD.

    Of course, this could all be for not if Piero Marini is made head of CDW as rumors suggest.

    This is Fr Z's take on the matter and he's not too impressed either.

    I am scratching my head this morning.

    Pope Francis has moved the former Secretary of the Pontifical Commission “Ecclesia Dei“, who was eventually consecrated bishop and became the Papal Almoner, back to the Pontifical Commission “Ecclesia Dei..." as Secretary… again.

    “But Father! But Father!” people will ask, “What does this mean? Wasn’t Archbp. Pozzo involved somehow with the degeneration of the talks with the SSPX?”

    He was around, yes, when things started to become more difficult, yes. But I suspect that there would have been complications no matter who was there.

    There is little doubt that Pozzo knows the material and terrain. He is arguably one of the better informed men in the Curia when it comes to dealings with the SSPX.

    Will that make any difference?

    I have a few less-optimistic interpretations, but I will keep them to myself.

    My initial guess is that in this move the PCED, which is now under the CDF, has been “beefed up” a little. Now the PCED has not only a Vice-President in the person of Archbp. Di Noia, it also has a Secretary who is a bishop. This does give the PCED a little more “weight”, in a sense.

    However, with a Prefect who seems not to want to have anything to do with the SSPX and now the return of Archbp. Pozzo to the PCED, one wonders how Archbp. Di Noia and Pozzo will “tag team” this complicated mess to a positive conclusion.

    Color me puzzled.

    In the meantime, everyone, surge forward!

    Use the provisions of Summorum Pontificum.

    Fr. Z did work for PCED for an extended period.

    That doesn't make him a Curial expert, but it makes him qualified enough to speak on this move, to some extent. Certainly more than most of us.

    The fact that he seems to have concerns, given his usual optimism, suggests to be that I ought to have them as well.

  23. Let's remind ourselves of the words of the unabrogated 1570 bull of St. Pius V, Quo Primum which codified the ancient Roman Rite of Mass:
    "Furthermore, the clergy are not obliged to celebrate Mass otherwise than as laid down by Us; and We grant in perpetuity that for the chanting or reading of Mass in any church whatsoever, this Missal is hereafter to be followed absolutely, without any scruple of conscience or fear of incurring any punishment, and may be freely and lawfully used, and that this present document cannot be revoked or modified, but is to remain always valid and to retain its full force".
    Whether a Pope could so bind his successors may be open to canonical argument. But no attempt to abrogate Quo Primum occurred in Paul VI's Missale Romanum (1969), John Paul II's 1984 indult nor Pontificum Summorum
    Numerous traditional priests have taken their stand on Quo Primum and should continue to do so.
    If, as reported, Pope Francis has forced the New Rite upon an order of friars it is an act of tyranny and should be resisted especially by the laity.

  25. Archbishops Pozzo and Di Noia are considered to be friendly to the S.S.P.X, and Bishop Fellay is continuing secret negotiations with Bishop Ratzinger. So they are getting ready for an arrangement, in which mad dog Müller will play the spoiler.

    Deal: International Ordinaraite or Diocese for the S.S.P.X and its affiliated religious orders; forum for 'respectful' criticism of non-infallible Vatican II teachings, avoiding all rancour and polemics.

    The Society property and four-fifths of its members will go along. One-fifth or so will go with +Williamson. The destiny of Tissier remains uncertain.

    Wild guesses, these? Yes, of course. But don't forget to consult Ecclesia Dei Adflicta of 1988. The primary purpose of the P.C.E.D. is to reconcile the S.S.P.X. So the addition of Pozzo to this body suggests a reinforcement in this task, no?


  26. One should be aware that Bishop Williamson's weekly emails have been getting more and more hostile to the SSPX, and Bishop Fellay in particular. This is a good indication that a deal is being brewed in the background.

    Pozzo is a very competent Curial official. Bringing him back to Ecclesia Dei is a desperate measure, but it would seem no one else was considered able to clean up the mess of recent months.

    So I think we should pray that in this darkest hour a little dawn may break.

The Orthodox preserved it; they praise God, they adore God, they sing, time does not matter. God is at the centre, and I would like to say, as you ask me this question, that this is a richness.
