Rorate Caeli

A Plot against the Pope?

Several Italian religious journalists (including Rodari, for Il Riformista, Tornielli, for Il Giornale) are reporting today on a dossier circulating within the Vatican which could reveal that a plot was planned for several months to embarrass the Pope in the "Williamson affair".

We had received the main accusation a few days ago, but had considered that it should be made public by other means.

Here is the text received by us:

"Msgr. Williamson was interviewed on Nov. 1st 2008 on religious matters (tradition and Vatican II) in the Bavarian seminary of SSPX (this in order to let Msgr. Williamson be accused for negationism in that country). Suddenly the journalist Ali Fegan of the program Uppgrad Granskning (Mission Research) asked him about a quote of one speech that took place in Canada some years ago on the gas chamber during the WWII. We all know the trap in which the bishop put himself in a very ingenious way, too confident in the opportunity to diffuse his niche ideas on holocaust than to protect the Church from the evil. This trap was indeed prepared for His Holiness Benedict XVI.

"But who told the journalists of the SVT (Swedish Television Broadcast) about this speech of Msgr. Williamson? If you see all the program broadcasted on January 21st 2009 you will find out that the suggestions came from a french journalist: Fiammetta Venner. Who is she? She is a very well known french lesbian activist. She work together with her [partner] Ms. Caroline Fourest (see her profile here: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiammetta_Venner). Together the lesbian couple gave to the press a new book on sept. 2008 (during the Pope's visit to France). The title of this book is: Les Nouveaux Soldats du pape. You can read more at their web site: http://nouveauxsoldatsdupape.wordpress.com/about/. In the interview, the lady accuses the SSPX of connection with far right parties in France, an opportune preamble to the accusation of Antisemitism.

"Now we found the people that suggested the plot. But who drove it in order to have ready the program up to the moment of the certain signature of the decree or removal of the excommunication of the SSPX bishops? Certainly someone in the Vatican that attempted to hit the Pope and his entourage and to weak the ambitions of the SSPX.

"Who is he? We have up to now some ideas of the personality. It has to be someone well affirmed in Rome, with good connections in France and a good relationship with Scandinavian church. The program was prepared in Sweden, a quite cold country for Catholicism, but why there? One answer can be the idea to launch a crusade for the reconversion to Catholicism of Sweden made by the SSPX (that for instance has only 30 people as Swedish faithful). In the program there is also an interview made by the bishop of Sweden Anders Arborelius OCD. He spoke about inclusivity as a principle of Christianity, instead of racism and intolerance (of which he seems to accuse the SSPX). ...

"So the people of which we are speaking as to be a Progressive high level Vatican officer that just few days in advance to the publication of the signed decree by the Commission of Legislative Text informed the journalist to come out with the incredible program. ..."

Even if there was a "plot", Bishop Williamson was not forced to say what he said at the interview...

Nonetheless, this falsely inflated media circus is not even the most important of this Pontificate! Or has it been forgotten that oversimplified or distorted reports of the Regensburg address caused actual deaths in areas with Muslim populations? And have the international news agencies apologized for that?

In a couple of weeks, this will be ancient history for the media - this story's news cycle, even in Catholic circles, is about to end...

I think a lot of people probably suspected some string pulling behind the scenes.

It would be fascinating to know how long that programme had been scheduled for broadcast on that particular day.

In this very hard time, we have to show our support both to the Holy See and the Society. Try to imagine, why those journalists tried to set up such a trap for Msgr. Williamson and His Holiness? The answer is simple, the want to destroy the good relationship between the Society and the Faithful, also they want to destroy the plan of the pope which brings back the tradition of the Holy Catholic Church.

All one needs to do is to look at the interview and it is clear that Williamson was ensnared. I feel that there is little point trying to identify the ultimate plotters. We know who the enemies of Christ are in the Vatican, and any number of them could be involved; and this sort of thing can be expected in the future as well, especially as long as H.H. continues to kick Brazilian communists upstairs into the curia in order to remove them from where they are doing the most damage.

What strikes me more is the weakness of the left in the Church right now. Look at the French bishops' response to the remission of the censures of excommunication. It was downright lame by 1970s or 1980s standards. They meekly pleaded that any acceptance of the Society of the Magisterium must include an acceptance of Vatican II. In the past, they would have demanded a submission to Vatican II documents per se, in black and white.

The leftists in the Church are finally beginning to realise that they must 'admit' traditionalism as an 'option' if only because they have failed so utterly. Consider that traditionalists worldwide are now about one-quarter of one per cent of the faithful (at the very most) and yet thirty per cent of French seminarists are traditionalists. That's not just a disaster for the left; its more than a calamity for them; it spells liquadation to their asinine reforms. Their imbecilic ideas have no future, while their own future consists of a few nursing homes and nothing more. And even they can no longer pretend that the Titanic is safe. Some N.O. priests in France serve a dozen or more parishes. It would be hilaraious were it not so tragic for souls. Their fig tree did not bring forth any fruit at all, not even bad fruit; it bringeth for rank contagion.

Serious housecleaning is necessary in the Vatican.
The Pope should have done this within the first six moths of his Papacy.
His failure to do so is the one HUGE mistake of his reign.
I can name several Cardinals who would be Benedict XVI's enemies, and would have no problem trying to embarass the POpe.

1) Angelo Cardinal Sodano, 81, the Dean of the College of Cardinals.
2). Francis Cardinal Arinze, 76, ex=Prefect for Divine Worship and a known enemy of the Motu Proprio and the SSPX and the Tridentine Mass
3). Giovanni Battista Cardinal Re, 75, a corrupt lacky of the old John Paul II regime. Liberal.
4). Archbishop Piero Marini, 67, ex-Papal Master of Ceremonies who certainly looks every time I see his face that he is sharpening his knives.
5). Cardinal Kasper, 75, dissident ecumaniac head of the Council for Christian Unity.

In addition to a legion of aging John Paul II devotees probably in their late 60's and early 70's in the Vatican Curia...of all levels (Bishops, Monsignors, priests, Canons, etc.)

Benedict XVI should remove Re and Kasper within days. As well as Tettamanzi in Milan the day after he turns 75.

If you ask me, I'm surprised that the storm is not worse than it is. Angry news articles and letters, petitions from politicians with memories shorter than a day, defiance from a few professors and a few liberal priests, the usual rantings from the dying remnants of the European Left... this is actually quite mild.

If anything, this tells me that the liberal "wing" of the Church does not have a fraction of the strength that it is reputed to have.

The blame is, no doubt, on Bp Williamson above all. He is the one who made these crazy statements.

But everybody suspected that there was something else : with 30 people belonging to SSPX in Sweden, a massively Lutheran (and deeply secularized) country.
The "coincidence" of the TV program and the official signature of the decree (Jan. 21) was also more than troubling.

But this time, we see that the couple of rabid anti-Christian Mrs Venner and Fourest are involved. Both are well known secularist activists, both made a profession to vomit on religions (Islam and Catholicism, nearly exclusively, I never heard any mention of Jewish extremist groups by them). Ms Fourest is an editorialist on France Culture radio (public) channel. She has got an award from the previous (conservative majority) Assemblée Nationale in 2006 (main chamber of the French parliament where anticlerical free masons are strong). Mrs Fourest and Venner are not just anti-trads, but they also attack Legionaries of Christ and Opus Dei, altogether with the Ratzingerian mindset.

If we read well the report, it means some Curian official has contacts, on purpose, with these two self-proclaimed ennemies of the Church. That nobody seems to be astonished by this is even more worrying ...

Deepest thanks for continually reminding us of how very important it is that we do everything we can to spiritually support our Holy Father.

I believe that beyond the immediate goals of this attack that this event is another piece falling into place in what will be a far more serious attack in the future.

It's going to take everyone's shoulder to the wheel to get through this and what's coming. Resolution of the issues surrounding the Society is critical and this effort to create division must fail. I believe the Society is to play a crucial role in the restoration and it is critical that there be no doubt that they are inside when they play that role.

"I can name several Cardinals who would be Benedict XVI's enemies, and would have no problem trying to embarass the POpe."

I'm not worried about the cardinals you have named. They are all past retirement age and are set to fade. For that matter, I suppose we should be thankful that Cardinal Re actually signed the document lifting the excommunications. And Cardinal Arinze was never enthusiastic about the TLM, but neither was he an enemy of it. Fairness demands that that much be said.

I am more concerned about the following:

1) The silence or mildness of most cardinals in support either of the lifting of the excommunications or of Summorum Pontificum. It is quite telling that since 07-07-07 only seven cardinals have publicly offered the TLM (as opposed to being merely present), and of these, four had already offered it prior to the Motu Proprio. Of the remaining three, one offered it in a manner that bespoke of a cavalier attitude towards the rubrics, while another offered it as far away from the limelight as possible. As for the recent furore, I do not recall reading of a single cardinal who has gone all out in support of his besieged Pontiff. This is worse than the silence of the world's bishops during the firestorm over Humanae Vitae.

2) The signs of the cardinals' non-acceptance of even the mild liturgical restorations of the Holy Father. Almost no cardinal has adopted the "Benedictine altar arrangement". A striking example of this was the Mass in St. Peter's Basilica yesterday, with Cardinal Rode as main celebrant. Here was a Mass offered on the very altar most identified with the papacy... and the Benedictine altar arrangement was abandoned! (The candles were arranged in triangles at the edges of the mensa). That the mere absence of a still-living Pope from that Mass was enough to overturn this little restoration is a powerful sign of just how fragile the Benedictine reforms really are.

3) As of today, there are only 115 cardinal electors, of whom another 3 are slated to turn 80 before the year ends; of these, only 32 will be below the age of 70 by end of this year, and of these 32 only about half were appointed to the College by Pope Benedict. With the exception of Cardinal Llovera, none of the younger cardinals are known to be sympathetic to the followers of the Traditional Mass.

Unless Pope Benedict moves quickly to appoint a large number of young cardinals who are faithful to his vision, the college will continue to be decisively weighted towards the septuagenarian cardinals who are the guardians of the pre-Benedictine way of things. And given the Pope's age, I hope and pray that he attends to this quickly. Of course, he will have to annul his own determination not to exceed 120 cardinal electors.

In 1909, in the midst of an audience with members of the Franciscan order, he (Pius X) seemed to fall into a trance. Moments passed, then his eyes sprung open and he jumped to his feet. "What I have seen is terrifying!” he cried out. “Will I be the one, or will it be a successor? What is certain is that the Pope will leave Rome and, in leaving the Vatican, he will have to pass over the dead bodies of his priests!"

Shortly before his death, another vision came to him: "I have seen one of my successors, of the same name, who was fleeing over the bodies of his brethren. He will take refuge in some hiding place; but after a brief respite, he will die a cruel death.

An excellent point.

The French episcopate seems a lot more subdued than they used to be - relatively speaking.

Francesco said...

There is definitely a plot against the pope, and the ringleader is Satan, who despises orthodoxy and tradition more than any of these progressives.

What the pope has done is given traditionalists a chance to restore tradition from the ground up. I do not expect the solution will come from the aging cardinals or bishops. But, as more and more priests are either from a traditionalist background or friendly/open to tradition, eventually more and more of the bishops and cardinals will be too because the leftists and modernists are not even having children, not to mention priests. The only way we traditional Catholics can fail is if we stop practicing our faith or if we fail to evangelize and catechize others.

If this plot theory is true, how did this video get into circulation ?. What's the route?.

As far as I can see the story at least seems to start with Ruth Gledhill at the Times - but she probably knew about +Williamson's views because she seems to know how the world of Catholic traditionalism works. The video seems to be available on youtube shortly after (youtube says 1 week ago). I guess the question is who put it there and who tipped off the journalists?.

Our Blessed Lady of Akita has admonished us about internal division and compromises that weaken The Faith. There we have it graphically illustrated amongst the cardinals and the episcopacy by contributors here. It is not the traditional hierarchy who divide it is the mischief-making neomodernists and the left-wing of the leadership. It was Pope St Pius X who warned us about these innovators & modernisers.

Significantly, they find themselves flirting on the same side of the divide as the sodomite minority and the other hawkers and peddlars of disobedience & rebellion in society.

That's to be expected.

But what's truly shocking is to then to have one of our own, Bp. Williamson, seal their success by unwittingly reconfirming on Swedish TV the lie he had previously been ensnared by the same plotters into asserting on German TV!

Although we have no idea what may have induced our good Bishop to have performed so well the disastrous role he has had in all of this (surely misplaced faith, not something more nefarious, was his primary failing), that he did so is one more piece of evidence of how far the enemies of Catholic Tradition will go to destroy the good relationship between the Society and the Church.

Pray for the Society and that no more of its leaders may align themselves with the enemies of Church unity.

very good point and interesting perspective about the cardinals, the present attack and TLM.

Cardinal Vingt-Trois, president of French bishops, finally spoke loud to defend the pope today in "Le Monde". He celebrated TLM last month but is still anti-TLM nevertheless.
Cardinal Lehmann, a famous liberal, previously spoke to support the pope against the demented wave of anti-Ratzinger insults in Germany.

So there isn't a strict link between supporting the pope against the present insults and supporting TLM and the removal of the excommunications.

The Great Apostasy proceeds afoot, and the stars (bishops, monasteries etc) are falling already. Let us be aware of the strategems of the enemy - that old serpent not only attacks the Magesterium, but he has been attacking Holy Tradition and Holy Scripture for years. Therefore, if we would hold firm, and help others to come and do so as well, we must not be open to the charge like many in the SSPX that they have no respect for the Scriptures. The Mass needs to be participated in and understood to the extent that the Divine Word is both proclaimed and heard! Williamson is a symptom of the kind of traditionalist that undermines Ancient Tradition - that we hearken unto the Word of the Lord and humble ourselves, trembling with self-accusation, before we show ourselves merely worthy of being outcasts. The Church got too Pelagian in the past - if she would recover, she must, as I say, hearken unto the Pauline Saving Gospel DOCTRINE of God - the doctrines of life-changing GRACE. No mere atmosphere of the dead letter will suffice against the Enemy - we need all Three Great Pillars of the Truth to fight Satan (the Word, the Ancient Tradition, and the Magesterium!).

You clarified my point very succinctly.

Until our undercover "anonymous" can complete his relentless and professional investigation of the evil-doers, the case will remain open.

Meanwhile, the apparent lack of serious self-reflection by the SSPX hierarchy and the Vatican (and their highly-polarized supporters) of their respective roles (rather than pillorying some undisclosed others) in making a mess out of this otherwise wonderful step in bringing together the faithful, can only delay full reconciliation.

Being a traditional catholic in Sweden I clearly see the muslim Ali Fegan as not only as a tool for the liberal forces in and outside the Church but also his own clear agenda.

Muslim Ali waited with his interview over two months until he got the signals from someone very close to Pope when to broadcast it.

A division between the Pope and the jewish community is an objective in its self. Swedish television has during the autumn 2008 broadcasted a statefinanced tv-series called "Halal-TV" where fundamentalistic female muslims once a week could proclaim their militant views. You will never see a "Catholic TV" nor a "Cosher TV" in Sweden.

The militant muslims in Sweden do not need any financing from any of the rich countries in the Middle-East. They get all the support they need from the state controlled and state financed TV.

Most work is carried out by persons like this one Professorn, left vinged activists. With molotov cocktails, stones and sticks we find them side by side with the militant muslims.
