Church Suffering and the Sabbatine Privilege

As we focus on relieving the Church Suffering from their pain in Purgatory, let us not forget about our own potential suffering and the potential suffering of our children, and the easiest way to lesson that time: The Brown Scapular and the Sabbatine Privilege.

From Charity for the Suffering Souls (Rev. Nageleisen, 1895 A.D.): "...Mary gives those who wear the holy scapular and fulfill the conditions prescribed, as much assurance of their eternal salvation as can be obtained during mortal life ...

"The Blessed Virgin, appearing to the Venerable Dominic of Jesus-Mary, addressed him thus: 'My son, though many wear my scapular, yet there are few that perform what is necessary to acquire the Sabbatine Privilege.' It was affirmed also by other supernatural revelations, that they who wear the scapular are released from Purgatory on the first Saturday after their death only on condition that they have fulfilled all the duties imposed thereby."

So, buy your Brown Scapular. Then have a Catholic priest officially enroll you in the Confraternity. And understand that the requirement is the daily recitation of the Little Office. However, every priest has the right to lessen that requirement, and most will allow a daily Rosary instead. You can learn more here

Last, our two key takeaways are: One, if you simply wear the Brown Scapular but are not enrolled and do not perform your daily duties, you are saved from eternal damnation, but you won't receive the Sabbatine Privilege. We're talking about spending possibly years, centuries or until the end of the world suffering in Purgatory, versus no longer than seven days.So get enrolled!

Below, please find the seventy-second posting of enrolled Souls of the Rorate Caeli Purgatorial Society.

Priests: The Souls still need more of you saying Mass for them! Please email me to offer your services. There's nothing special involved -- all you need to do is offer a weekly or monthly TLM with the intention: "For the Souls enrolled in the Rorate Caeli Purgatorial Society."

How to enroll souls: please email me at athanasiuscatholic@yahoo.com and submit as follows: "Name, State, Country." If you want to enroll entire families, simply write in the email: "The Jones family, Ohio, USA". Individual names are preferred. Be greedy -- send in as many as you wish and forward this posting to friends as well. And please try to follow this formatting strictly.
Please consider forwarding this Society to your family and friends, announcing from the pulpit during Holy Mass or listing in your church bulletin. We need to spread the word and relieve more suffering souls.

Please pray for the enrolled Souls and the 30 holy priests saying Traditional Masses for the Society:

"For all the souls enrolled in the Rorate Caeli Purgatorial Society: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the Faithful departed rest in peace. Amen."

Then ...

Almighty and ever living God,
we ask Thy blessing upon the priests
who offer Masses for the Purgatorial Society.
Give them a greater awareness of the grace
that Thou dost pour out through the Sacraments,
and by their devout celebration of the Sacred Mysteries,
increase in them a love for Thee.
Give strength to Thy priests, O Shepherd of the flock;
when they are in doubt, give them the assurance of faith,
and in Thy goodness confirm them as heralds of Thy Truth
to all who seek to follow in Thy path.
We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal Priest,
Who lives and reigns with Thee in the unity with the Holy Ghost,
God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Enrolled Souls of the Rorate Caeli Purgatorial Society:

NB: These are only the names from this week. The entire list is tens of thousands of souls long and cannot be reproduced week after week publicly.

Absolutely Beautiful!

What great Mercy of Our Mother!

One may also want to try and die at 11:59 p.m. on a Friday! :)

Our Lady is good.

I hope that all Catholics will consecrate themselves to Our Lady through the scapular! As regards the Sabbatine privilige, it looks like there is some confusion as to the authenticity of the alleged apparition of Our Lady to John XXII (or at the very least the papal bull of John XXII). Anyone know the official church position on the Sabbatine privilige?

Adfero said...

The Sabbatine Privilege is not on the Manual because it's not an indulgence. The Privilege came directly from Our Lady, is a devotion, and is not an indulgence.

The Privilege was approved by Pope John XXII and confirmed by several popes. It has not, and cannot be abrogated, just like the First Saturday devotion or First Friday devotion, and the promises associated with them, cannot be abrogated.

And please no links to bloggers who say they can. They know not what they speak of.

@adfero
I am justly rebuked.

Adfero said...

Liam, don't take it personally, there's a lot of nonsense out there from modernists who HATE or don't care to understand devotions like this.

For example, go to the link you sent me. Then read the story and follow the link he provides to read more information. Once on that page, if he would have taken more than five seconds to read on, he'd see his own source contradicts his main point, and that it's a devotion and not an indulgence.

How someone can so carelessly dismiss Our Lady with so little, and poor, research is beyond me.

@adfero
no offense taken my friend, I assure you. I have worn the brown scapular since being 'vested' with it at my First Holy Communion in 1957.

Adfero said...

That's awesome!

Liam Ronan said...

@adfero
awesome maybe my brother in Christ Jesus, but most likely a miracle of grace. God Bless the priests and nuns of St. Joseph's School, Sharon, Pennsylvania for their patient indulgence with such an obtuse soul delivered into their hands.

Adfero said...

Liam, my father went to that school! I drove by it last weekend while visiting my parents and I was born in Sharon General.

Pulex said...

Thank you very much for this information. Which bulls of John XXII and his successors you refer to. It would be good to look into the sources? Also, is any approved version of the Little Office of BVM good for this, since there are slight variations (Roman, Carthusian, Brigittine)?

JB said...

Wait didn't Vatican II do away with all that "devotional" stuff???

I have a question: can a person wearing the miraculous medal be as confident about supernatural benefits as someone who wears the scapular?

Dan Hunter said...

JB,

No

Different sacramental.

Adfero said...

The name of the bull is Sacratissimo uti culmine of John XXII, 3 March, 1322.

Amazing! Perhaps your father was a classmate of mine?

Liam, he was born in 43 so no, but I think you were classmates with my aunt. Wish I could give you more but it would give me away!

I have to admit the idea that merely wearing an item, even be it a Brown Scapular, will ensure one's eternal salvation is ridiculous to me. Offensive, even, since simply wearing it doesn't ensure any sort of change in behavior or attitude for the Christian.

Antoniette said...

This is why my church was built in 1884. The original Shrine to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Manhattan,on 116 street. We are now blest with a great new pastor. We will be having our novenas begin on July 6, a solemn tridentine mass, at midnight between the15 and 16 and a full tridentine pilgrimage on the 20. When Popo Pius X ordered our Madonna crowned in 1904, he also granted a plenary indulgence for visits to the Shrine and usual prayers between July 6 and the 26.

Adfero said...

Garrett, this apparition is Church approved. You may want to reconsider public comments that are disparaging of Our Lady and must infuriate her Son.

It's not the wearing of a piece a cloth that saves you -- it's the love, respect and faith in Our Lady that saves you from falling into mortal sin.

Adfero said...

Since I needed a new one anyway, I just went to the local Opus Dei store -- by no means a center for radical traditional thinking!

In the pamphlet that accompanied the Brown Scapular they sold me, and entire page dedicated to the Sabbatine Privilege.

Dan Hunter said...

Garrett,

Our Ladys quote to St Simon Stock, who she entrusted the Brown Scapular to, is as follows:

“Take this Scapular, it shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger and a pledge of
peace. Whosoever dies wearing this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.” This is Mary’s
promise made July 16, 1251 to Saint Simon Stock.

And the Church approved this.

Garrett said...

Adfero said: "Garrett, this apparition is Church approved."
- I am aware of that. The Novus Ordo is also approved.

Adfero said: "You may want to reconsider public comments that are disparaging of Our Lady and must infuriate her Son."
- I am not of the opinion that stating that the idea that simply wearing an item will get on automatically into Heaven is infuriating to Jesus. Let's not be overly melodramatic.

Adfero said: "It's not the wearing of a piece a cloth that saves you -- it's the love, respect and faith in Our Lady that saves you from falling into mortal sin."
- I wholeheartedly agree with that statement! That was my point, really...

Dan Hunter said: "...And the Church approved this."

Surely you are not saying that a belief in this (or any other apparition) is required in order to be a Catholic? One may choose, or choose not to, believe in the apparitions of Fatima, Lourdes, etc. etc., regardless of whether the Church "approves" the apparition. I happen to believe in Fatima and Lourdes, but it is most certainly not required of me nor of anyone else.

Back to my original point: the words of Our Lady seem to indicate that merely wearing the Brown Scapular ensures one's salvation, i.e. nothing else is added to this requirement (e.g. "you must act in such and such a way, you must do x,y,z," or even "wearing this will change your behavior etc". It just seems odd and counterintuitive since we know scapulars are not magic talismans.

Adfero said...

Garrett, while technically one does not have to believe an approved apparition, as a very well-respected FSSP priest explained to me, you better have a pretty dramatic reason not to. It's not just something you can, on a whim, choose not to believe because the Church has approved it and Our Lady has said it.

You should give more consideration to why you don't believe it. And talk to a traditional priest about it.

New Catholic said...

Even if one does not believe, which you are right, Garrett, is fine in a "strict sense", why become an "apostle of unbelief"? Keep the unbelief to yourself, and ask for the spiritual advice of a traditional priest.

Garrett,

Yes, and...?

Are you calling the Blessed Virgin Mary a liar?

Liam Ronan said...

This Friday is the Feast of the Sacred Heart here in Ireland and Saturday, of course, is the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. May the twin Feasts inspire greater love among us.

Sancte Alphonsus said...

Let us also note that Our most beautiful and Blessed Mother reiterated the importance of the scapular devotion for our times during one of the most extraordinary miracles recorded in post-biblical times, the miracle of the sun at Fatima, where She briefly appeared as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel holding the infant Jesus in one hand and the brown scapular in the other.

Garrett, I mean you no offense at this but your objections to the brown scapular are very basic ones - ones in which converts ask a lot about. There is more than enough information online which makes the distinctions you ask about and answers the questions you have.

Donatus Justin said...

I wish to say the prayer in Latin, please provide the translation in Latin. Thank you.

Tom Policinski said...

Quite honestly, I'm tired of this modernist idea of simply dismissing Church approved apparitions. This notion is utterly foreign to traditional Catholic thought, and is borne out of the individualistic and entitlement culture we now have. People feel it is now a right to judge for themselves what fits their individual beliefs and sentiments. They believe they have a right to personally judge that which the Church has already passed judgment on. Furthermore, they feel that right is precious privilege they have as Catholics, which they should exercise as much as possible. This entitlement has deprived them of the graces as wisdom promised to ALL who adhere to such approved apparitions and devotions, not just the ones who "like" them. Finally, they have deprived the Church of the unified body of believers she once had; an international and intergenerational and family which literally prayed and believed, together.
