Juventutem: Images of Pontifical Mass in the Ancient Cathedral of Rio

As we had announced here, Traditional Masses and activities are taking place in the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel of the Ancient See, the former Cathedral of Rio. Reader Luis Augusto Rodrigues Domingues has posted several images of the beautiful chuch completely filled with young people during the Pontifical Mass celebrated yesterday by Bishop Fernando Rifan, apostolic administrator of the Personal Apostolic Administration of St. John Mary Vianney, in Campos, Brazil.

Who said WYD is all doom and Gloom. Holy Father Francis will probably celebrate one of these traditional Masses soon or later. He is the Pope to Rebuild the Church and I get the impression that he is not interested in antagonizing anyone.

Instead of shouting Heretics from the rooftops, hijacking V II events like this is the better way to evangelize faithful Catholics to their rich lost (almost) heritage in the ancient ways. Sort of like FSSP and Institute of Christ the King are doing. If SSPX would join them, and have tons of priests at these events and things like the Eucharistic Congress etc, etc, then perhaps, more Faithful VII Catholics can taste the beauty of their faith.

What's Juventutem's schedule at WYD?
(Or is WYD over already?)

Wish they covered that on EWTN instead of the opening Mass by the beach. Seeing more Protestant style NO's like those won't stir the curiosity of anyone outside the Faith
to convert. It was like they were trying to make a concert/Mass hybrid.

Also, Bishop Conley had a great post about teaching his group the Latin responses for the NO mass. While, of course, the traditional mass would be preferable, seeing a regular diocesan bishop take even this step is encouraging. http://www.ncregister.com/blog/wyd-witnesses/prayerful-trip-to-an-imperial-chapel/

And the congregation seemingly top heavy with young men, which I never see at the parishes I know!

EWTN coverage of WYD is run by the" life on the Rock " crew. No suprises where their priorities are.

They are committed N/O give them milk style of evangelizing the youth. They are committed to the faith, but it would seem to me guitars and more guitars and 'exiting' youth masses is their idea of bring the kids to know Christ.

Bwangi,

Although I do agree, I wonder why there are no TLM at the Diocese of Buenos Aires...

It's great to see pictures like these and I'm so glad to see young Catholics attending Latin Masses. Sadly, pictures like these will provide a stark contrast with the hootenanny jamboree we're likely to see the Pope celebrate.

@ Bwangi Kilonzo, SSPX will not allow themselves to be poisoned by the modernists. FSSP and other Traditional Congregations who made an agreement with Rome has been weakened on their fight for Tradition since they are now saying the Novus Ordo Mass which they fought against in the beginning. They now believe in Religious Liberty and False Ecumenism since the Bishop that ordains their priests are modernists and that is the homily that seminarians hear from these Bishops. What is the use of saying TLM in big Cathedrals if truth is not preached?; if doctrine is set aside? Anyway, the Church attendance on SSPX Mass Centers are growing and sooner or later, these faithful can influence the future seminarians in the novus ordo and these seminarians will become priests and bishops. Catholic Tradition will be restored.

As Dan said, this is wonderful! See, as I said earlier, a World Juventutem Day is needed, not a WYD. I think Juventutem should organize something of their own rather than coat-tailing off of this event. Whether the Pope would go to such an event, yeah, is another story, perhaps one we may already know the ending to. All things, though, are possible with God.

As someone who attends a Institute parish, I don't think they've ever had a Novus Ordo here...

Daniel, feel free to send me some evidence that the FSSP says the Novus Ordo. People like to spout that off like it's Gospel, but all it ever is is rumor. You'll see my email address in my profile.

They do?

This would be news to the Fraternity priests I know.

They now believe in Religious Liberty and False Ecumenism.

I find that hard to square with some homilies I have heard from FSSP priests.

Most of us are grateful to the Society for its role in keeping the TLM alive in the dark years after the Council. But it doesn't help their cause when you beat up on the Ecclesia Dei societies like this.

Thanks so much. Great. Why no word of this in any, any of the Catholic media? Good job, Rorate.

This is a gross generalization. Such congregations certainly have their battles to fight which is precisely why they exist - to do so from within the Church. The greatest impediment to Church reform has always been from within the Church. Padre Pio didn't walk out of the Franciscans when they were wire-tapping his confessional or prohibiting him from offering public Masses. Moreover, to conclude that ever member of such congregations accept wholesale everything that they might hear in a homily, as if hearing a heresy were the same as ascribing to it, is a non sequitur. In all the FSSP parishes I have seen over the years across several countries, I have never encountered an overt case of truth being deliberately set aside.

Daniel, this is baloney. I'm a long time member of an FSSP parish. I know MANY priests in the Fraternity, and if you can find a single one that is "now saying the Novus Ordo," you can have that million dollar lotto ticket next time I scratch it.

FSSP and Institute of Christ the King priests & their parishes are as helpful to bishops as they are to us laity. I have heard, directly, of instances where bishops discover (re-discover) their masculine, priestly identity by the encouragement of FSSP presence in their diocese.

I, too, wish EWTN would have covered this -- juxtaposed it to the "hootin-nanny" performances on the beach. I think it's what Mother Angelica would have wanted and preferred were she still calling the shots. Pray for EWTN
