Rorate Caeli

Novena for the election of the Supreme Pontiff

The Society of Saint Pius X (FSSPX / SSPX) has proposed a novena, from March 1 (today) to March 9, for the Election of the Supreme Pontiff: who can be against this initiative? Please forward it to all your Catholic friends (a PDF Latin-English version is also available). (Tip: Father Finigan)

Here is the full text:

Veni, Creator Spiritus
Veni, Creator Spiritus
Mentes tuorum visita
Imple superna gratia
Quae tu creasti pectora

Qui diceris Paraclitus
Altissimi donum Dei
Fons vivus, ignis, caritas
Et Spiritalis unctio

Tu septiformis munere
Digitus paternæ dexteræ
Tu rite promissum Patris
Sermone ditans guttura

Accende lumen sensibus
Infunde amorem cordibus
Infirma nostri corporis
Virtute firmans perpeti

Hostem repellas longius
Pacemque dones protinus
Ductore sic te prævio
Vitemus omne noxium

Per te sciamus da Patrem
Noscamus atque Filium
Teque utriusque Spiritum
Credamus omni tempore

Deo Patri sit gloria
Et Filio, qui a mortuis
Surrexit, ac Paraclito
In sæculorum sæcula. Amen.

Come, Holy Ghost, Creator
Take possession of our souls
Infuse with heavenly grace
The hearts Thou hast created

Thou Who art called the Paraclete
Best gift of the Most High God
Living fountain, fire, charity
And spiritual unction

Thou sevenfold gift
Finger of God’s right hand
Thou promise of the Father
Teaching speech and understanding

Enkindle the light of our minds
Pour love into our hearts
The infirmity of our body
Confirm with perpetual strength

Repulse the enemy even further
And give peace in his stead
May Thou so lead us
That we evade all harm

Through Thee grant us to know
Father as well as Son
And with Both Thee, Spirit, Trinity
Forever may we believe in

Let glory be to God the Father
And to the Son, Who from the dead
Has arisen, and the Paraclete
Unto ages of ages. Amen.

Collect for the Election of the Supreme Pontiff (From the Votive Mass Pro Eligendo Summo Pontifice)

O Lord, with suppliant humility, we entreat Thee, that in Thy boundless mercy Thou wouldst grant the most Holy Roman Church a pontiff, who by his zeal for us, may be pleasing to Thee, and by his good government may be ever honored by Thy people for the glory of Thy name. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son who with Thee livest and reignest world without end. Amen.
V. Most Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary.
R. Pray for us who have recourse to thee!
St. Pius V, pray for us.
St. Pius X, pray for us.

This gesture by SSPX reminds me of the famous verse, heralded against the reformers, "FAITH WITHOUT WORK IS DEAD."

Thanks for forwarding this Rorate! I will most definitely be taking part in this! The conclave will most likely start after the novena finishes.

Prayed and praying! Wonderful.

Right, Poeta. One never does know. The person always has something smarmy or sarcastic to say.

May God grant you many years, Bp Fellay! Thank you so much for inviting the whole Church, once again, to know of and recognize the support, love, and devotion the SSPX bishops, priests, Brothers, and Sisters, as well as the Faithful who assist at the Masses said by SSPX priests, have for the papacy and the pope (and ALL the popes of the last 2000 years!)

May the Lord keep you strong, Bp Fellay, and give you many graces!

May the Lord grant us a great pope, faithful to Tradition, who will lead the Church out of the darkness of the last 50+ years!

May God bless us, everyone!

Just a reminder that the FSSPX operates under the state of emergency and aupplied jurisdiction clauses of canon law. That we have an emergency is a fact that we cannot deny, especially today in the interregnum. To have these bishops and priests operating without official canonical jurisdiction and approval is, IMO, a miscarriage of Justice and something that should have been corrected long ago.

The ending of the oratoin is rather odd. Normally for such prayers it is the short from and not that found in a collect.

Note that the coin image is a mock-up by a designer called Fabrizio Annovi, not the actual coin that will be issued -- although the actual €2 coin will probably be almost identical.

Fr. John Berg, FSSP, Superior General of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, has asked that a prayer for the election of a new Pope be recited every day after the Leonine Prayers of Low Masses in all our apostolates. Please join us in this daily prayer for the upcoming conclave.

Thank you. Have prayed and will continue to pray.

To the editors of DICI: the PDF version of the novena has a typo in the Latin of the hymn. The second line of the stanza should say "Altissimi donum Dei", i.e., "donum" for "domum".

(To Rorate: No need to publish this comment if you can just forward the information to the right person at DICI.)

poeta and Matt:

The SSPX needs to act (ie. work). That is, come to term and reunite with Rome.

Dear beng

Anyone who's had the slightest involvement with the SSPX knows that they don't need to be told to "work": parishes, remote mass centres, schools, missions, retreats etc.

That is how the real struggle for the future of the Church is being fought, until hopefully our new Holy Father allows them to open the "second front" by the removing the so-far silly persecution of the SSPX over last 40 years and making it clear to everyone that they are not "outside".

Prayers for the future pope should be said by all faithful Catholics. A follow up novena would would be even more important. This one would ask that all who would call themselves Catholic would agree to submit to the authority of the next pope in order to heal the divisions and scandals within the Church. Given the fact that the office of the pope is the principle of the faith and unity of the Church this goes without saying.

If anyone prefers not to use the Paschaltide doxology for the hymn, the appendix to the 1912 Antiphonale Romanum (sorry I don't have the page number - I think it's in the Hymni antiqui) gives this as a doxology for extra T.P. :

Sit laus Patri cum Filio,
Sancto simul Paraclito.
Nobisque mittat Filius
Charisma Sancti Spiritus. Amen.

Dave K,
I'm not sure what "scandals" you are referring to, unless they are the general loss of faith, abuse in the Novus Ordo mass (in both translation and execution), the lack of vocations, or perhaps the child abuse cases alleged against numerous NO priests? History will show that the SSPX was the remedy, not the cause of these "scandals within the Church".
