Father Junipero Serra United States Capitol, Statuary Hall |
November will mark the third centennial of the birth of one of the most indefatigable missionaries in the history of the New World - Fray Junípero Serra, OFM, beatified by John Paul II in 1988. From his first studies in his native Mallorca to his death 70 years later in the Carmel Mission in Monterey (Monterrey), Upper California, New Spain, his whole life was dedicate to the spread of the name of Christ. Our new header is dedicated to a man who was the last of an impressive string of missionaries larger than life, great saints who spread the Gospel like wildfire throughout the New World since the very first years of the discoveries - many other missionaries came after him, but never again in his gigantic scale, the same of Saint Francis Solanus and Blessed Joseph de Anchieta in South America in earlier centuries.
