Joachim Cardinal Meisner (1933-2017) |
Of your charity, pray for the repose of Joachim Cardinal Meisner, who passed away this morning, as the Archdiocese of Cologne announced.
A native of East Germany, and a good friend of Pope John Paul II, Meisner played an important role in Church resistance to the atheist regimes of Central and Eastern Europe. After being transferred to Cologne in West Germany, Meisner was also one of the most outspoken episcopal critics of the moral corruption of Western liberal society. Sadly, his position on the morning after pill for rape victims was disingenous, irrational and immoral. But his courage and clarity at the end of his life in signing the four dubia on Amoris Laetitia shall be remembered forever. May the Lord grant him eternal rest.
