PRUDENTIA: "Be ye therefore wise as serpents and simple as doves." |
The current regime in charge of the Vatican cannot remain in place forever. At nearly 88, Francis is not getting any younger.
But he is the Pope. It is not within our canonical responsibilities to deny it categorically.
As we have always advised our readers, ever since the very day of Cardinal Bergoglio's election, when this blog was the first to sound the alarms and remained practically alone for a long while, the Lord's words are clear: we must be, "wise as serpents and simple as doves." (Mt 10:16) It is possible to be forceful, direct, brave, yet hopeful -- without being rash, imprudent, and filled with despair. This is not cowardice: this is wisdom. (Prov. 21:23)
What is the use for the future of the Church for a cleric, including a bishop, to be excluded from the clerical state or even excommunicated -- as it has recently happened with Father Fernando María Cornet? These are not the actions of a confident regime. But the sun is fading and the regime is setting. Why give it ammunition now?
It seems like an eternity, but Francis too shall pass. His days, like those of all of us, are numbered. (Lk 12:25) Better to hold your fire now and keep your voice and influence inside the Church for the days ahead. A conclave will arrive in time, and prayers and penance are needed more than ever.
