Many Plenary Indulgences available throughout the Year of Saint Joseph, starting today: Conditions (in English)

The Pope introduced the Year of Saint Joseph, to celebrate the 150 years of his Patronage over the Universal Church.

Along with the papal apostolic letter, the Major Penitentiary introduced a set of new plenary indulgences, available until December 8, 2021. The Apostolic Penitentiary letter is here (in Latin and Italian).

The details are the following:

Conditions for the plenary indulgence

The plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions) to Christians who, with a spirit detached from any sin, participate in the Year of St. Joseph on these occasions and manners indicated by the Apostolic Penitentiary:

IMPORTANT: Plenary Indulgence to all faithful caught up in the Coronavirus situation

The Apostolic Penitentiary has decreed norms granting Plenary Indulgence to various categories of faithful caught up in the current ongoing situation of the coronavirus pandemic. The Decree was made public today.

The specific norms are the following:

The Plenary Indulgence is granted to the faithful affected by Coronavirus, subjected to quarantine by order of the health authority in hospitals or in their own homes if, with their souls detached from any sin, they will spiritually join the celebration through the media of the Holy Mass, the recitation of the Holy Rosary, the pious practice of the Via Crucis, or other forms of devotion, or if at least they will recite the Creed, the Our Father and a pious invocation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, offering this proof in a spirit of faith in God and charity towards our brothers and sisters, with the will to fulfill the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer according to the intentions of the Holy Father), as soon as it is possible for them.

Health workers, family members, and those who, following the example of the Good Samaritan, exposing themselves to the risk of contagion, assist Coronavirus patients according to the words of the divine Redeemer: «Nobody has a love greater than this: giving life for their own friends »(Jn 15:13), will obtain the same gift of the plenary Indulgence on the same conditions.

Furthermore, this Apostolic Penitentiary willingly grants Plenary Indulgence under the same conditions on the occasion of the current world epidemic, also to those faithful who offer a visit to the Blessed Sacrament, or Eucharistic adoration, or the reading of the Holy Scriptures for at least half now, either the recitation of the Holy Rosary, or the pious exercise of the Via Crucis, or the recitation of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, to implore from Almighty God the cessation of the epidemic, relief for those who are afflicted and eternal salvation of how many the Lord has called to himself.

All Souls' Day: Plenary indulgence reminder and the Rorate Caeli Purgatorial Society

Please, we beg you, don't forget the poor Souls on All Souls Day tomorrow (Wednesday). Besides getting Masses said for them, as we do here, the best way you can help them tomorrow is this: Plenary Indulgence for each day of the First Full Week in November.

But remember:

    • * Make a sacramental confession within a week of All Souls Day

    • * For a plenary indulgence be free from all attachment to sin, even venial sin (otherwise, the indulgence is partial, not plenary, “full”).

Priests: The Souls still need more of you saying Mass for them! Please email me to offer your services. There's nothing special involved -- all you need to do is offer a weekly or monthly TLM with the intention: "For the Souls enrolled in the Rorate Caeli Purgatorial Society."

The overwhelming majority of our priests are diocesan with all the time crunches that parish life brings. So we are making a special plea today for you traditional order priests -- join the Society! Our traditional Mass-only priests must lead by example. This is a great way to do just that. We are only asking for one TLM a week or a month. Nothing more.

How to enroll souls: please email me at athanasiuscatholic@yahoo.com and submit as follows: "Name, State, Country." If you want to enroll entire families, simply write in the email: "The Jones family, Ohio, USA". Individual names are preferred. Be greedy -- send in as many as you wish and forward this posting to friends as well.

Plenary Indulgence reminders: Veni Creator on Jan. 1

A Reminder on the Jubilee of Mercy

Much has been written or posted, in this blog and elsewhere, about the unsettling circumstances attending the declaration of the Jubilee of Mercy. We have every reason to expect that under the cover of this Jubilee many things will be said and done even by the highest-ranking prelates that will only worsen the climate of heterodoxy in the Church as a whole. Rorate will continue to provide coverage of the intensifying attacks on orthodoxy that, we expect, will be perpetrated in the name of "Mercy".

At the same time, it would be a mistake to allow our indignation and anger at the crisis in the Church and its enablers to prevent us from making use of the graces of the Jubilee. In many dioceses, the Jubilee is being marked with increased opportunities to receive the Sacrament of Penance. In this Holy Year we have almost unlimited opportunities for obtaining the Jubilee indulgence that were granted by Pope Francis on the first of September: passing through any of the numerous Holy Doors that have been opened throughout the world and the performance of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, plus the special opportunities for indulgences granted to the sick, the elderly and the imprisoned. (Speaking of the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, Francis said that "each time that one of the faithful personally performs one or more of these actions, he or she shall surely obtain the Jubilee Indulgence".)

Reminder for the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus - Plenary indulgence reminder

Pope Pius XI, in the encyclical Miserentissimus Redemptor (May 7, 1928), gave the following command:

"...we decree and command that every year on the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, -- which feast indeed on this occasion we have ordered to be raised to the degree of a double of the first class with an octave -- in all churches throughout the whole world, the same expiatory prayer or protestation as it is called, to Our most loving Savior, set forth in the same words according to the copy subjoined to this letter shall be solemnly recited, so that all our faults may be washed away with tears, and reparation may be made for the violated rights of Christ the supreme King and Our most loving Lord."

The Holy See then proposed the following formula for the act of reparation, which is also covered by a plenary indulgence in the usual conditions (Ench. ind. 4. ed, aliae concessiones, 3):

DECREE ON CONDITIONS FOR PLENARY INDULGENCES
    - During the Year of the Consecrated Life

    DECREE
    URBIS ET ORBIS

by which are established the works to be accomplished in order to obtain the gift of Indulgences on the occasion of the Year of the Consecrated Life

The Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life having requested to this Apostolic Penitentiary to have duly determined the conditions to obtain the gift of Indulgences that the Holy Father Francis, on the occasion of the imminent Year of the Consecrated Life, intends to widen for the renewal of religious institutes, always with the utmost fidelity to the charism of the Founder, and in order to offer to the faithful of the whole world a joyful occasion to confirm Faith, Hope, and Charity in communion with the Holy Roman Church, under the most special mandate of the Roman Pontiff, this Apostolic Penitentiary willingly grants Plenary Indulgence, under the usual conditions (Sacramental confession, eucharistic communion, and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father), to all the single members of the institutes of consecrated life, and to the other faithful truly contrite and moved by the spirit of charity, to be obtained from the First Sunday in Advent of the current year [November 30, 2014] up to February 2, 2016, the day on which the Year of the Consecrated Life will be solemnly concluded, that can be also applied as suffrage for the souls in Purgatory:

    Catholic Thanksgiving Day

The last day of the calendar year is when we give thanks for the past 365 days.  Even though Anno Domini MMXIII was a roller coaster of a year in the Church, we still have plenty to be thankful for in our lives.

The traditional sacraments, good priests and religious, family, friends and health are hopefully some of things for which we can give thanks today.  For loved ones lost this year, perhaps we can give thanks that they were given Last Rites and, God-willing, died in the state of grace.

To that end, the Church grants a plenary indulgence today (31 December) under the usual conditions for publicly saying or singing the Te Deum "for the favors received in the course of the entire year."

Plenary Indulgence Reminders for First Week in November

November, the month especially dedicated to the Poor Souls, begins tomorrow, with the most richly indulgenced week of the year - we could call it Indulgence Week, for the great generosity with which the spiritual wealth of indulgences is made available by the Church.

There are several plenary indulgences available for the first week in November. They are the following:

    29
    For the faithful departed
§ 1. A plenary indulgence, applied exclusively to the souls in Purgatory, is granted to the Christian faithful who:

1° on each single day, from the first to the eighth day in November, devoutly visit a cemetery and, even if only mentally, pray for the faithful departed; [Note: one plenary indulgence for each day, if the usual conditions are met]

2° on the day of Commemoration of All Faithful Departed [November 2] (or, according to the Ordinary, on the preceding or subsequent Sunday, or on the day of the solemnity of All Saints) piously visit a church or oratory and there recite the Pater and the Credo.

    Plenary Indulgence for those going to Rio;
Partial indulgence for those praying for WYD

The great metropolis between the mountains, the bay, and the South Atlantic will host World Youth Day - and the Apostolic Penitentiary made public today that those going to the city of Saint Sebastian of Rio de Janeiro, and take part in any foreseen activity sometime from July 22 to July 29, may benefit of the plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions. Those legimitately impeded from going may also gain plenary indulgences.

Those not going to Rio may gain partial indulgences if they "pray for the youth to strengthen their faith and lead a holy life," invoking the patroness of Brazil, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception "Aparecida" and ending with the official WYD prayer.

As we reported here, the catecheses and traditional public Masses will be celebrated in Rio's ancient Cathedral (Antiga Sé). If you know a young Catholic going to Rio who is not very much aware of Traditional Catholic practices, you may guide him to traditional activities (times and address here).
