Santa Maria Maggiore

For those who have neither read nor heard about this piece of news yet: Cardinal Law, who turned 80 on the 4th of November of this year, was replaced on November 21 as Archpriest of Santa Maria Maggiore by Archbishop Santos Abril y Castelló, Vice-Chamberlain of the Apostolic Chamber and former Apostolic Nuncio to the former Yugoslav republics of Slovenia, Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Sounds like we will have a new Cardinal from Spain.

The appointment should be of some interest to Traditionalists because Santa Maria Maggiore is the only Papal Basilica with regularly-scheduled Traditional Latin Masses (as opposed to private Masses).

The question is: why was Cdl. Law ever placed there? I had read that the stipend whih accompanied that position was 132,000 Euros a year!
I think Catholics would be better served if they never knew what went on in the Vatican. This was the instruction Luther's Augustinian superiors gave him: Do not go to Rome as you will lose your Faith!

I was actually just in Rome and attended an ordinary form daily mass at this church celebrated ad orientem surprisingly enough! It seems the Franciscans of the Immaculate are in charge of the sacristy here, so perhaps they are having a bit of influence...
