Universal "indult" for the Traditional Missal?

We translate below the relevant portions of the ACIPrensa [Catholic News Agency - Alejandro Bermúdez] report. It should be read with a (huge) grain of salt...

VATICAN - March 30, 2006 (ACI) - The Missal of Saint Pius V, which the Catholic Church used up to 1962 and which was replaced by the "Novus Ordo" (New Order) liturgy approved as a consequence of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council, could be approved for universal use, according to sources close to the Vatican.

The decision, regarding which Pope Benedict XVI consulted with the cardinals and with the heads of the Vatican dicasteries, could be announced after the April 7 meeting of the Pontiff with the "capidicasterio" [Heads of dicasteries].
The universal approval would mean that the old rite Mass may be freely celebrated throughout the world by the priests who wish to do so.

The measure is not directly related to the problem of the Lefebvrist schism, for, as a theologian, the Pontiff always expressed his wish to recover this liturgy.

  1. Great news if true. Who can deny the power of prayer?

It also makes the lifting of the decrees of excommunication a logical next step.

This site has been a huge blessing as this story unfolds.

  2. Instanter et instantius oremus!

  3. I hope that this will happen and I pray fervently for it - but I only believe it when I see it ...

  4. I think we all know that it is our prayers that have kept this alive! I am so glad to see that the truth and the power of prayer is very much the belief of Traditionalists. We can't give up now. Keep those rosaries going!! And thanks again for keeping us posted on what has been happening in Rome. This is truly a wonderful site. God Bless

  5. I cannot wait! Although I'll probably have to, since I live in the Archdiocese of Washington and McCarrick is notoriously "hesitant" about implementing anything that smacks of orthodoxy. I heard he may be "retiring" this summer and it can't happen soon enough for me.

  6. Papa Benedeto is simply enormous. We cannot have a reform of the reform without equality for the 1962 Missal. Your comments are heartwarming and needed even when failure looms. However, I must believe the momentum is towards a reconciliation. 40 years of failure has sobered good men to recognize we are thwarting God's Will in trying to thwart the Roman Rite of Pius V.

  7. It would be wrong to issue a universal "indult." An indult is a deviation from the law. The Tridentine Mass already may be said by any Roman Rite priest who wishes to incur the wrath of his or her bishop. There is nothing illicit about the Mass of such venerable and ancient tradition that has been hallowed by the centuries and verified by so many saints, Popes and Councils. So this "freeing of the Mass" should instead be an unambigious statement by the Holy Father that the Mass has been and is free forever, that it is never and can never be illicit to worship as our fathers worshipped. Only then may we be confident that such an aberration never happens again.
