  1. Thanks be to God that the Mass has been freed! A huge step forward has been taken.

    One does detect somewhat the delicate situation between the Pope and the Bishops in his explanatory letter, which leaves many issues unresolved. One also see Pope Benedict expressing sentiments towards the Pauline Missal that seem out of step with his real feelings.

    Let us keep praying for the Pope!

    By the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum, Pope Benedict XVI has reinstated the Tridentine Mass in its rights, and clearly affirmed that the Roman Missal promulgated by Saint Pius V had never been abrogated. The Priestly Society of Saint Pius X rejoices to see the Church thus regain her liturgical Tradition, and give the possibility of a free access to the treasure of the Traditional Mass for the glory of God, the good of the Church and the salvation of souls, to the priests and faithful who had so far been deprived of it. The Priestly Society of Saint Pius X extends its deep gratitude to the Sovereign Pontiff for this great spiritual benefit.

    The letter which accompanies the Motu Proprio does not hide however the difficulties that still remain. The Society of Saint Pius X wishes that the favorable climate established by the new dispositions of the Holy See will make it possible – after the decree of excommunication which still affects its bishops has been withdrawn – to consider more serenely the disputed doctrinal issues.

    Lex orandi, lex credendi, the law of the liturgy is that of the faith. In the fidelity to the spirit of our founder, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, the attachment of the Society of Saint Pius X to the traditional liturgy is inseparably united to the faith which has been professed "always, everywhere and by all."

  6. For this relief, much thanks. Deo gratias indeed.

    The only sticky point for those exclusively attached to the "Pian-Johannine" form of the (one!) Rite is the following note from the explanatory letter: "in order to experience full communion, the priests of the communities adhering to the former usage cannot, as a matter of principle, exclude celebrating according to the new books".

    Although not part of the MP as such, this phrase could be used very much as a stick with which to beat such priests and societies who wish not to be required ever to say the new "form" of the rite. As I say, the current superior of FSSP, unlike some of his more liberal predecessors, wishes his priests to celebrate the old form exclusively and is very much opposed to their celebrating the new. One can easily hear those bishops and priests opposed to this liberalisation saying: "If I'm going to be required to say / permit the old rite when requested, they should be required to reciprocate to snd out the message that the new rite is valid." Fair enough, one might think - sauce for the goose...

    The get-out clause, however, would seem to be the "in principle": i.e., all that would appear to be proscribed is an unconditional refusal in advance even to consider their being allowed to celebrate the new form under any circumstances. If a society wished, however, to insist merely that its members not normally consider celebrating according to the new form I cannot see how this is forbidden by the letter (nor even perhaps the spirit) of the new MP.

    It is clear, however, that both "sides" must be generous in the interpretation and implementation of the new MP - with the caveat that it is principally those who are opposed to this liberalisation that are in a position to obstruct and abuse it.

  9. Article 6 seems only to authorize the 1962 readings in the vernacular. Whispers in the Loggia had said the following: "The post-Concilar Lectionary -- 'even in the vernacular' -- is permitted as an option for Pian-Johannine liturgies." But Benedict merely decrees that, when the vernacular readings of the 1962 Missal are used, "editions recognised by the Apostolic See" are permitted. This means vernacular editions of the 1962 readings, not the 1970.

    Note the following in the explanatory letter issued by the Holy See. "It is a 'complete' or 'integral' Missal in the Latin language, that is, it also contains the readings for the celebrations (it is not distinct from the 'Lectionary' as the later 1970 Missal is)." Thus article 6 does not envision usage of the Novus Ordo lectionary.

  12. That is absolutely correct, Anonymous. Only the readings of the actual Missal of John XXIII may be read in the vernacular, as Article 6 of Summorum makes perfectly clear (The USCCB Q&A says, "Whenever the extraordinary form of the Roman Liturgy is celebrated, the vernacular edition of the Lectionary for
    Mass may be used, while the calendar of the Missal of Blessed John XXIII is followed", which could cause this confusion - perhaps the USCCB BCL is where the illicit excerpts came from...).

    As anyone who is familiar with the Missal of John XXIII knows, there is no such thing in it as a "Lectionary" as a separate standing text (as the Holy See Press Office otherwise explains), only as an annual cycle inseparable from the propers of the Mass. And these readings may be read in the Vernacular, as Art. 6 of Summorum states.

  13. There are some tendentious comments in the BCL gloss on the MP. In comparing the two Missals it refers to the 1962 as "priest with back to the people....." As has been pointed out time and time again, this is a bogus.

    The celebration is not "priest with back to people" but it is a celebration ad orientem (the ancient tradition) which the first edition of the Novus Ordo assumed and which is mandatory with the '62 Missal. The versus populum option is problematic in terms of the tradition and reflects dated ideas of the 60's and 70's.

  15. I agree with Benedict Ambrose. I was quite surprised at how well presented the USCCB documents are. I pray that the implementation will be as well and fairly executed.

    Overall, this is a great day for all! Summorum Pontificum goes far beyond anything I would have imagined.

    And it is so exciting to see His Holiness' perspective on "liturgical innovation" so clearly stated. Pray God that his desires are implemented and we will soon see the "ordinary" usage be celebrated the way it was intended the whole time.

  18. Article 2 strikes me as rather curious. Why the exception of the Sacred Triduum? Even though 'perfidis' is not present in the 1963 missal, did the pope include this article to safeguard against an anti-semitic hullabaloo?

    Permission for the intrusion of the vernacular is unfortunate, even if only the correct 1962 readings are permitted at this time. Not only would the beautiful gospel and epistle chants be greatly missed at solemn celebrations, it is also an open invitation for compromisers to move increasingly from a respectful vernacular to a less respectful one, and then from formal language to the conversational newspeak of the New Mass, and then from that to politically-correct speak, in which 'brethren' becomes 'brothers and sisters' ad nauseum. Surveying the decades preceding the introduction of the new missal, we can all see where baby steps lead.

  20. Article 5.2 says regarding the 1962 Mass that "on Sundays and feast days one such celebration may also be held." There are quite a few parishes around the U.S. that celebrate indult 1962 Masses several times each Sunday to accommodate everyone who wants to attend. Some parishes have as many as four 1962 Masses every Sunday -- http://www.ecclesiadei.org/masses.cfm. Does Article 5.2 mean that these parishes have to cut back to only one 1962 Mass on Sundays?

    Please note that the Motu Proprio doesn't forbid to celebrate the Holy Triduum according to the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite. It simply states that private Masses according to the same form may not be said during the Triduum.
    This is perfectly normal.

    When the extraordinary form is used with the explicit approval of the parish priest or rector of the church for a given group of faithful, the Triduum is allowed.

  23. Deo Gratias - this is truly a great day. No minimum numbers of faithful requesting, no expiry on the Motu Proprio, recognition that the TLM was never abrogated, and Bishop Fellay recognises that it satisfies one of their pre-conditions on proper negotiations. Write to the Holy Father and thank him (and Cardinal Castrillon as well) - he will certainly get enough criticism for this. The will of God is visibly moving in our present time.

    It actually seems to say that no private Masses of either the ordinary or extraordinary form can be celebrated.

  25. why do the notes on the explanatory letter tell us that B16 says that the 62 missal says nothing about the direction of the altar or the priest. B16 never even mentioned it... or are they just saying the the explanatory letter doesn't tell us about whether mass is to be celebrated with the priest's back to God or facing God. ;)

  28. So it is possibile then for Catholics who assist at the Novus Ordo to ask (strongly) for baptsims, marriages per 1962?

    I hope no-one complains if they do. The issue of confirmation is also interesting.

    Perhaps...perhaps...the response of the USCCB has something to do with the incoming chair of the committtee on the liturgy being Bishop Serratelli (who is also chairman of the Committee on Doctrine, chairman of the Ad hoc Committee for the Review of Scripture Translations).

    Pope Benedict XVI?s Apostolic Letter Given Motu Proprio issued Saturday, July 7, 2007, allows for parishes to celebrate daily and Sunday Masses in Latin without special permission from the local ordinary (archbishop/bishop).

    Following Vatican II Council held in Rome from 1962-1965, daily and Sunday Masses throughout the world have been celebrated in its local vernacular. However, some Catholics wanted to enjoy the Roman Rite (Latin) Mass which had been familiar to them from childhood.

    Realizing this need over 20 years ago, the Archbishop of Miami granted permission to celebrate the Sunday Mass in Latin, most recently at St. Robert Bellarmine in Miami and St. Paul the Apostle in Lighthouse Point.
    In addition, Masses throughout the Archdiocese of Miami are celebrated in 16 other languages as well, including sign language.

    It is the intention of Archbishop John C. Favalora to continue providing the Latin Mass in the Archdiocese of Miami and takes this opportunity to welcome back anyone who has been away from the church.

    We see a gigantic figure crossing the stage of Catholic history who is humble and unassuming, vigilant for the flock, and dedicated to feeding all of His Master's sheep with theological truth in teaching and liturgical orthodoxy in worship. Like his divine Master, this quiet yet powerful figure, is working like none of his predecessors-- for many, many years --to literally feed, nourish, tend and defend Christ's flock. He is doing this with the nourishment and food of His Divine Master and by tending with a brave hand and mending this gigantic rift of liturgical warfare between the "Novus Ordo Missae" of Vatican II and the centuries old worship of Roman Catholic orthodoxy, the "Missa Latina Tridentina." This rift has so saddened this great pope who is returning the divided sheepfold to its Orthodox Roman Catholic roots.

    This great Pope, Benedict XVI, shall certainly deserve the title of "great" for just this epic deed of healing the rift in the Church that has spawned a multitude of physical and spiritual horrors for humanity in the last forty years. Here Pope Benedict XVI is showing the heights of his own personal holiness; for he sees, as no one else can see, what diabolical catastrophies have been precipitated upon humanity in the last forty years by suppressing the Church from the multitude of graces of Christ's Almighty Mass of tradition that stretches back to the UPPER ROOM-- the "Missa Latina Tridentina."

    Pope Benedict XVI also clearly sees the spiritual nightmares in the last forty years that have preceded the societal and human nightmares and which include: communion in the hand, which came with the "Novus Ordo Missae" as well as its consequent lack of reverence for the Holy Eucharist that spread like a plague over the once Orthodox Roman Catholic World; the lack of personal reverence before the Eucharist by breaking the "sacrum silentium" of tradition in the Churches, and the diminution of awareness of God's Infinite Presence by no more genuflecting or kneeling.

    The suppression of the "Missa Latina Tridentina" also brought about much collateral damage i.e. reduction of the use of sacramentals and the sacrament of Confession/Reconciliation, the ignoring of the most holy rosary, and even a catastrophic drop in Sunday Mass attendance. What the removal of the "Missa Latina Tridentina" has also done in reducing the numbers of priests and holy brothers and sisters in the once orthodox Roman Catholic world is
    a monumental tragedy when one looks at the Church before the removal of the ancient Mass of tradition and what resulted thereafter. Only Pope Benedict XVI clearly sees this, like no other, because he has intimately lived through the entire process of Vatican II and the dropping of the Latin Mass of tradition and remembers all to well, the before and after.

    Moreover, Pope Benedict XVI, sees with the keenest of vision how the results of such monumental spiritual wreckage in the Church has brought about the worst societal wreckage in the history of Christianity: fornication, adultery, divorce, child-pregnancy, teenage pregnancy, drugs, alcoholism, wars, perversion, pedophilia, and sodomy, notwithstanding the worst plague of all--the millions and millions of apostate Catholics in Europe and America. This great pope, Benedict XVI, will surely bring the Roman Catholic world back to its knees in reverence; and with this heroic act of healing this diabolical liturgical rift, epic numbers of conversions to the orthodox Roman Catholic Church shall inevitably follow!

The provisions were made with anyone in mind who wants older forms, for any decent reason. People who want to avail of this extraordinary use are not second rate citizens."

    e.g. "There are those who were neither in a separated group nor remember the pre-Conciliar Mass. These are younger people who have discovered the older form."

    Yet who does the Archbishop speak of?

    ambrosanius, why do say that this perfectly normal? It would seem a contradiction that when with people it is allowed to celebrated the Tridium with the 1962 missal, but not for private use. With public is the most important aspect of the mass.

    Could you explain this please?

  35. On the one hand no-one wants to hear "I told you so." On the other, I don't expect any Bishop to issue a mea culpa. Perhaps one will...somewhere...but surely no-one is looking for it. We've all got enough baggage.

    However, I hope we will not have to see too many exercises in what seems to me, episcopal self-justification, white-washing.

    Back in February on my blog I posted details of a brief conversation with our (new) Bishop of Raleigh. I asked him, too bluntly, whether he would do what was asked of him:

    "You will do what the Holy Fathers asks won't you?"

    His reply which is etched on my brain was:

    "We[sic] will do whatever the Church requires of us. It is also a question of resources and personnel. We are working on it."

    This now from the Diocese of Raleigh.

    On Saturday, July 7, His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI promulgated motu proprio the Apostolic Letter On the Use of the Roman Liturgy Prior to the Reform of 1970. (Summorum Pontificum).

    The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge will meet with advisors to begin pastoral implementation of the Holy Father’s instructions. Directions given in the Apostolic Letter will be effective September 14, 2007, the feast of the Triumph of the Cross.

    The Holy Triduum functions were and are never meant to be private and were and are always meant to be solemn.
    This is the reason why, during Maundy Thursday Mass, all priests of a given parish, apart from the one who celebrates the Mass itself, don't say their private Mass, but take communion in the sanctuary.
    Ditto for Easter Eve.

From your answer it seems that they never had this faculty, in the first place, to say private masses during these days. Why the need to write this article?

    Perhaps, because this norm isn't so well known among faithful and even priests nowadays...

    In a word, in order to celebrate the Holy Triduum, the permission of the pastor or the rector of the church and a request from a group of faithful is always needed. Which actually seems to me very reasonable.

As dusk ushers in the night over England and brings to an end a day the like of which I for one never thought we would see I am gently reminded that it was here in England that the first intimation of today's events occurred when Cardinal Heenan secured the English Indult in 1971. Let us pray for all those, living and dead, who have been estranged from the Church in the intervening years, and then perhaps reflect on the words of TS Eliot in Little Gidding:
    The end of all our exploring
    Will be to arrive where we started
    And know the place for the first time.
    Through the unknown, unremembered gate
    When the last of earth left to discover
    Is that which was the beginning.

    I think that England, always Mary's dowry, by the grace of God and intercesson of English Martyrs, is just making up for the horrors of reformations and HVIII errors in action of Cardinal Heenan, in establishing the first indult having contributed this way to re-establisment of True Mass. May God bless England and all English catholics abundantly that we may work for him better and better.

    Yes, as he often does, Rocco gets it wrong. I guess he was only leaked a copy of the Latin text, and Rocco apparently can't read Latin. Or else he just didn't understand what Article 6 actually said. Really, the idea of the post-1969 lessons being used with the Tridentine Mass is so silly that you wonder how anybody could have come up with it.
