Vatican not recognizing Kosovo independence

The Holy See does not plan to recognize the independence declared by Kosovo in the near future - and this due to Ecumenical considerations.

The Italian news agency ANSA reports on an interview with the President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, Cardinal Kasper:

"The Vatican - the German Cardinal recalled - has not said anything on the recognition [of the independence] of Kosovo and we still await; in the end, the great European nations position themselves for the recognition, [and] it will be seen what the Holy See will do in the near future."

The Cardinal [porporato] recalled that the Holy See "understands the concerns of Serbians because Kosovo is the birthplace of the Serbian Orthodox Church and understands the suffering caused to them by the separation of Kosovo". All this was made known, Kasper has explained, to the Serbian ambassador before the Holy See, Vladeta Jankovic, received by the Pope on February 21, only four days after the proclamation of independence by Pristina.
It is truly very important to defend the rights of Christians under siege in Kosovo.
