Rorate Caeli

Pope: enough with false controversies!

[O]nce again in the Epistle there is a reference to the somewhat gloomy situation of the community of the Galatians, when Paul says, "if you bite and devour one another; take heed you be not consumed one of another. ... Walk in the Spirit"[Galatians v, 15-16]. It seems to me that in this community - which was not on the path of communion with Christ, but of the exterior law of the "flesh" - even controversies naturally arise, and Paul says: "You become like beasts, one bites the other". He thus refers to the controversies which arise there where the faith degenerates into intellectualism, and humility is replaced with the arrogance of being better than the other.

We see well that also today similar things happen, where, instead of entering in communion with Christ, in the Body of Christ which is the Church, one wishes to be superior to the other, and with intellectual arrogance wants to make believe that he knows better. And thus arise the controversies which are destructive, [thus] arises a caricature of the Church, which should be one soul and one heart.
Benedict XVI

  1. Wow! An actual sermon delivered right at his erring children by the Supreme Pontiff: manifesting a papal charism too long suppressed. I feel duly and refreshingly chastised.

The Feast of the Chair of St. Peter falls on Quinquagesima or 'Shrove' Sunday this year; it honours the authority of the Vicars of Christ. "Enter in the obedience of the faith", "even today similiar [fighting] takes place", "intellectual arrogance".

Hmm. Could he be preparing a gift for the S.S.P.X for Sunday? And will the Society accept the gift? Is this a smoke signal?

  3. It's hard to say whether this is a good or a bad omen with regards to the 22nd and a possible gift to the SSPX. To whom is this directed would be my question. Is it directed to the predators ready to scalp Bishop Williamson or is it to Bishop Williamson himself or, even to the entire Fraternity? I guess we'll know come Sunday next.

  4. The thought of a certain timely gift on the Chair of Peter had crossed mind as well. not impossible.

  5. Anonymous12:11 AM

Let us pray even more ardently for the Holy Father to take the "con" of the Barque. He is moving that way every day.

    Long may Pope Benedict live.barcople

  6. Anonymous1:20 AM

We see well that even today similar things take place - Benedict XVI

    Indeed! Watch out you wolves!

German Shepard is in the front line guarding the herd.

  7. Anonymous1:26 AM

Let's keep praying! Are you all saying the novena? My 6 year old reminds me everyday :)

  8. Anonymous1:55 AM

What, a wise and brilliant man, this Pope is. When he is gone, how many will remember him as such...???

  9. Anonymous2:38 AM

God Bless the Holy Father. Let us all continue to pray for him so that he "may not flee for fear of the wolves" and that he may have the strength and desire to do what is necessary to save, fortify, and bring unity to Holy Mother Church.

  10. Anonymous3:09 AM

This is clearly a signal to the SSPX, as well as to those who oppose the Society's reconciliation with Rome.

I highly recommend viewing the DICI interview with Bishop Fellay:

He impresses me more and more. I don't think that the Holy Father is describing Bishop Fellay.

  11. Do you guys have an RSS feed for the blog?

  12. Anonymous5:41 AM

He's telling Modernists and Catholics to get along. What!

  13. Thank you Your Holiness for correcting all of us. We should not perpetuate false controversies and instead seek unity in the body of Christ.

Statements like this is what the Church needs!

  14. Anonymous7:24 AM

This was aimed at all those who are throwing insults and calumnies. I certainly hope Fr. Rizzo FSSP takes note. His interview was low and mean. Detraction if not calumny. Outrageous!

  15. I've never had a Papal reality check.

  16. Anonymous2:37 PM

What a fantastic picture of our Holy Father you have used on this post! Please can you tell me if/where I can get a larger copy?

  17. Anonymous3:05 PM

I certainly hope Fr. Rizzo FSSP takes note. His interview was low and mean. Detraction if not calumny. Outrageous!

Oh, really? Fr. Rizzo was recounting a personal experience. Do you accuse him of lying? Were you there?

  18. Dom,

You may find and order interesting prints at Fotografia Felici or at (look for February 11, 2009).

Pray and study the Magisterium on these verses.

And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:32

For there are also many disobedient, vain talkers, and seducers: especially they who are of the circumcision: Who must be reproved, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake. One of them a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are always liars, evil beasts, slothful bellies. This testimony is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; Not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men, who turn themselves away from the truth. Titus 1:10-14

No man can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one, and love the other: or he will sustain the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. –Matthew 6:24

Woe to you that call evil good, and good evil: that put darkness for light, and light for darkness: that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter. Woe to you that rue wise in your own eyes, and prudent in your own conceits. -Isaias 5:20-21

Woe to them that are of a double heart and to wicked lips, and to the hands that do evil, and to the sinner that goeth on the earth two ways. –Ecclesiasticus 2:14

That with one mind, and with one mouth, you may glorify God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. –Romans 15:6

The double-minded man is inconstant in all his ways. -James 1:8

Is this Pius IX or Archbishop Lefebvre? No it's BXVI in the same discourse where he criticized LUTHER, the Enlightenment, Communism... for FALSE [Liberty] Freedom!

"The first fact to be observed, therefore, is the truth: (liberty)freedom against the truth is not freedom."

"La prima realtà da rispettare, quindi, è la verità: libertà contro la verità non è libertà."...

  22. I think these comments are aimed at the Austrian and German bishops for the recent debacle especially in Austria. I do not think it is aimed at the SSPX. The German and Austrian Episcopate is in far more need of such sermons.

By the way it is a great nuisance that curials are available for interviews with secular media. As it is egregious that in fact
confidential matters are often if not permanently leaked to "Vaticanistas". And the quixotic comments of Marchetto , Maertino etc are no better than expendable.

  25. Thank you very much DCS.
    God bless you...

  26. Bishop Williamson's was one mighty false controversy.
