Rino didn't make it to the list!

Abp Duka, the joys of Vatican II are still being rewarded then. What a shame !

What happened to Westminster...???

Crouchback said...

Cardinal Murphy O'Connor....is still with us....I forgot about him.

J.G. Ratkaj said...

It is pleasant that Florennce's Archbishop Giuseppe Bertello has been promoted. A solid defender of ethics and morals in a quite tough city.

Tom said...

Crouchback - well an exception was made for New York, since Cardinal Egan is still under 80, so I guess one could have been made for Westminster. Thank God it wasn't - but it's only a matter time, sadly.

My Goodness! There are very few who are remotely Conservative in this list:

Abp. Woelki (Berlin)

Abp. Coccopalmerio (Legislative texts)

Abp. Abril y Castello (Santa Maria Maggiore)

The rest are pretty much fruits of Vatican II, especially Joao Braz de Aviz.

God Help us!

In a previous thread, someone expressed the hope that at least some of the new Cardinals be prelates who have celebrated the Traditional Latin Mass since Summorum came into effect.

Sad to say, not one of the twenty-two new cardinals have done so.

O'Brien finally got his hat...what a shame....I would much rather have seen Chaput get it. I am not surprised that Vigneron didn't get it.

There were no big surprises and there were no big disappointments, save Duka. But what do you expect...Ratzinger is a product of Vatican Council II...

Matthew said...

Mr. Milam:

"Ratzinger is a product of Vatican Council II." I agree; however, that is a quite passive way to word the statement, for Ratzinger was also a prominent architect of Vatican Council II (cf. The Rhine Flows into the Tiber by Fr. Wiltgen.

Eugene said...

Wow, NOT ONE TRADITIONALIST! But why would that be surprising?

Joe Potillor said...

I'm not the biggest fan of Abp Dolan...Good to see Abp Nichols didn't get the hat, I pray one day that Bp Schneider gets the red hat.

Anonymous said...

Eugene, is there a single pure traditionalist to get the hat, outside of traditional groups in irregular status?

Nice: by our feed, I notice that we were the very first English-speaking blog to make this list public. Not the first time, of course: thanks to our readers.

Not a single surprise, as it can be seen. The unwritten Ratzingerian rule was not exactly disobeyed for Dolan, it just happens that Cardinal Egan turns 80 before any other of other Emeriti of similar sees: in April.

George Allencherry, the Syro-Malabar major archbishop, is an excellent choice. Though obviously not a Roman, he was a supporter of the Juventutem group at World Youth Day and is seemingly much more favorable towards traditional Catholicism. If Cardinal Ranjith were to become a real Papal "Candidate," I bet he'd get Cardinal-elect Allencherry's vote.

Artificial rage is useless. No one even remotely expected the Pope to suddenly appoint the 4 SSPX bishops or Bishop Schneider to the Cardinalate.

@ Matthew...I was just trying to be nice...you don't want to see me rant, that would be bad for all of Christendom!!! LOL

It's not surprising...Bertone is really running this consistory. You can see his fingerprint everywhere...look at the curial appointments...they are all "his men."

I have two serious hopes though...

1) Nichols never gets the hat, which will happen, so it's a pipe dream...

2) Gomez figures out what he wants, because right now he's turning into a Mahoney clone...slowly but surely...he needs to reign in the machine in LA, in a bad way...

Those two can just wait, forever...as far as I'm concerned.

Same here. I think that Detroit's time as a red hat see is over. It no longer has the prominence it had in the mid-20th century (just like another once-cardinalitial see in the USA, St. Louis).

I understand that Cardinal-designate Collins of Toronto was the officiant for conferral of minor orders at the FSSP seminary in Denton, Nebraska, just recently. Can anyone confirm this?

Adam R said...

Even if none of these candidates attend the Latin Mass, it's nice to know that one of the leading Republican presidential candidates regularly attends the Latin Mass! That would be Rick Santorum.

Even if you do not like him on all of the issues, it is wonderful news to hear about a presidential candidate!

Xavier Rynne said...

I was always a fan of then Cardinal Ratzinger's writings on the Council. He was quite stark in his assessment that the period since Vatican II has been "decidedly unfavorable" for the Church. His criticisms, however, do seem slightly ironic given that he was a periti at the council heavily involved in opposing cardinals like Ottaviani at every turn. There is an air of detachment to his observations which perhaps aren't supported by the historical record.

Augustinus said...

Don't forget that Cardinal-elect Calcagno is a "Siri Boy"

That was Archbishop Prendergast of Ottawa.

Someone commented on this thread that none of the new Cardinals have offered the Traditional Latin Mass. That is true, but one of them, Cardinal-elect Betori, has presided at least thrice over Pontifical Vespers according to the 1961 Divine Office, all in the Institute of Christ the King's seminary in Gricigliano.

Matthew said...

Mr. Milam,

I figured as much, and know you knew that - no harm intended!

Adam R,

For what it is worth, I recall a commenter on Fr. Z's blog saying that he assists at a Latin novus ordo Mass.

David L Alexander said...

Adam:

To confirm what another commenter has said, a former pastor of his parish tells me that the senator attends the ordinary form in Latin, not the TLM. I don't think that makes him a worse candidate, as he enjoys rather broad support among traditional pro-life Catholics at present.

That would be the Novus Ordo in Latin.

@ Matthew,

No worries...we Traddys have to stick together. We are the minority in most places...but you still don't want to hear me rant. It can get ugly. LOL

There are no trad bishops appointed because there are no trad bishops left.

Reading this whole thread, it is a sad thing that most Catholics know who are the Cardinals and Bishops who have actually said the Mass of Ages. Prior to the 70s, any prelate would!

Allan Lopes dos Santos said...

João Braz, Cardinal?

:/

Gosh! Darn!! Bishop Howard Hubbard missed again!!!

Why do think that is?

I'd say it is very indicative.

So happy that new the Archbishop of Manila is not included though I know that he could be included in future consistories. Even I'm a Filipino I know I need to defend my Faith from those who tries to water it down.

Johannes de Silentio said...

We here in the Albany Diocese will fervently pray that Cardinal-designate Dolan will exercise his influence to see that Bishop Hubbard's successor will profess the Catholic faith. That in itself may be an improvement.

(Although, to his credit, Bishop Hubbard did attend and preach at the one and only TLM in his diocese).

Would that change if Pope Benedict XVI offered the Traditional Latin Mass?

"There are very few who are remotely Conservative in this list:"

There are plenty of "conservative" bishops/Cardinals within the Church.

The majority of conservatives, at least as the Latin Church is concerned, support the Novus Ordo, ecumenism, Communion in the hand, altar girls, and so forth...

Correct?

David,

Archbishop Collins did not confer the minor orders for the FSSP's seminarians, rather, it was Archbishop Terrance Prendergast of Ottawa.

Calcagno is not a Siri's boy or perphaps he was, but now he's a Bertone's supporter. In his old diocese, when he came to Rome, latin mass was prohibeted by his vicar...probably with his consent

An uninspiring list of new Princes of the Church.

Will this Consistory become known as the "Carnival Sunday Consistory"?
