De Mattei: Brexit and the Decline of the West

The White Cliffs of Dover, England, as seen from Cap Gris Nez, France |
The British referendum of June 23rd (Brexit) has sanctioned the definitive collapse of a myth: the dream of “a “Europe without frontiers”, built on the ruins of its national States.
The Europeanist project, launched by the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, had in itself the seeds of its own self-destruction. It was completely illusory to expect the implementation of an economic, monetary union before a political union; or, even worse, to envisage using monetary integration in order to establish political unification. The plan, though, to reach political unity by extirpating those spiritual roots that bind men together was even more illusory. The Charter of Fundamental Human Rights of the European Union approved by the European Council in Nice in December 2000, not only expunges any reference to Europe’s religious roots, but has in itself a visceral negation of the natural and Christian order. Article 21, by introducing the prohibition of any discrimination related to “sexual tendencies”, contains, in nuce, the legalization of the crime of homophobia and pseudo-homosexual marriage.

Rorate Analysis: SSPX communiqué on relations with the Holy See
Does the communiqué of the Superior-general of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), released today, really mean the end of negotiations with the Holy See? Many commentators seem to think so, including respectable ones, such as Edward Pentin.
We are going to surprise you, but that is not at all what happened. The central part in the communiqué is this:
IMPORTANT: SSPX Communiqué after meeting of all Superiors (on Canonical recognition)
At the conclusion of the meeting of the major superiors of the Society of Saint Pius X that was held in Switzerland, from June 25 to 28, 2016, the Superior General addressed the following communiqué:
The purpose of the Society of Saint Pius X is chiefly the formation of priests, the essential condition for the renewal of the Church and for the restoration of society. In the great and painful confusion that currently reigns in the Church, the proclamation of Catholic doctrine requires the denunciation of errors that have made their way into it and are unfortunately encouraged by a large number of pastors, including the Pope himself.
1 July 2016, to abstain or not to abstain?
Many Catholics who attend (usually exclusively) the traditional Latin Mass adhere to the disciplines in place during 1962, the year of the Roman missal permitted under Summorum Pontificum. Some do not. And some have crafted a sort of hybrid approach, selecting which fast days to observe and which days of abstinence to waive using a mix of 1962 and post-Vatican II disciplines.
Those who stick purely to 1962 have no challenges when it comes to the TLM and the corresponding discipline of the day. For instance, many of the collects of the TLM during Lent reference the ongoing fast, referring to the 40 day fast that was mandatory in 1962 (and centuries prior), only to be whittled down to two days following the Second Vatican Council. Fasting the 40 weekdays of Lent while attending the TLM avoids any contradictions between the propers and liberalizations enacted after 1962.
Those who choose a hybrid approach, though, have some challenges to reconcile. One such conundrum will happen on 1 July 2016, the feast of the Most Precious Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, on the 1962 calendar. This first class feast lands on a Friday this year, a day of abstinence from meat.

The Traditional Mass and the Laity: a Position Paper from the FIUV
The Communion of the Faithful at a Dominican Rite Mass celebrated in Oxford, England |
Today I am posting a new 'Position Paper' on the 1962 Missal published by the FIUV, the Foederatio Internationalis Una Voce. This addresses the argument, made from time to time, that by not having as many lay people involved in the liturgy in roles such as Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Lector, leader of the Prayers of the Faithful and so on the Traditional Mass 'excludes' people, and fails to foster their participation.

What happens with democracy is the same as what happens with the stars of modern bullfighting: the fights only end well for them when they contend with bulls with cut horns; if it falls to them to fight a bull with full horns, they forget their posture, start to tremble, and end up being gored.
So it happened with the British referendum, which was a great bull thrown into the arena of democracy -- this charade that Money control at will while they provide it with bulls with cut horns, which they can fight with a stock-market panic here and a media distortion campaign there. But this referendum unearthed the inner ghosts of a Deep England which identified in the disgraceful European Union the humiliations suffered in its old age; and the old Englishman, fed up with being trampled upon, and with the most debasing derision being inflicted upon him (including a Mohammedan mayor in London!), decided to gore, in a dying gesture of bravery.

Draw the living waters - 60 years of Haurietis Aquas - II
-The Three Great Gifts of the Sacred Heart
In the first part of this series, Haurietis Aquas and its prominent place among the writings of Pius XII were properly introduced, as well as the need for the encyclical: to present again to all the faithful why the Sacred Heart is such a noble and inherently Traditional object of adoration for all Catholics.
The Sacred Heart is also, Pope Pius reminds the faithful, the origin of the three most sublime gifts of the Lord to mankind: "Himself in the Sacrament of the Eucharist, His most holy Mother, and the office of the priesthood shared with us".
Draw the living waters - 60 years of Haurietis Aquas - I
100 years after Pope Blessed Pius IX had extended the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to the Universal Church, Pope Pius XII, of most glorious memory, decided to celebrate the occasion with one of the brightest lights of his pontificate, the Encyclical Letter Haurietis Aquas, signed on May 15, 1956.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
My dearly beloved Sons,
On this day, feast of the holy Precursor, the Church asks for her faithful the grace of spiritual joys and for their hearts to be guided into the way of eternal salvation. St. John the Baptist, inasmuch as during his life he pointed to Him Who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, still remains the privileged intercessor for those who seek God.

Persecution, he said, was coming. There had been a riot or two already. But persecution was not to be feared. It would no doubt cause apostasies, as it had always done, but these were deplorable only on account of the individual apostates. On the other hand, it would reassure the faithful; and purge out the half-hearted.

It is earth-shattering for a pope to mix-up a two-faced devil with Jesus. It happened last Thursday when Bergoglio mistakenly referred to a column capital on Vézelay Cathedral: a “case of mistaken identity” emblematic of this pontificate, even if a somewhat superficial ghost-writer was probably to blame.

How dare you call this a sign of genocide?! |
From the very beginning, before almost anyone else dared call what has been happening to Christians under ISIS "genocide", this page sounded the call: with our identification with "Nun, the sign of genocide", and our explanation on why it is genocide: "It's over: Genocide has been accomplished." (on why the word is deliberately and appropriately used, based on the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide).
The last 3 days has seen much of the Catholic commentariat scramble to analyze, to critique, or -- in some cases -- to break the limits of intelligence and plain common sense in order to defend Francis' remarks on marriage and cohabitation (June 16) as "orthodox" or profoundly "pastoral", or even as presaging some sort of doctrinal "deepening" or "development". This has resulted in Pope Francis' scarcely less explosive statements on Saturday, June 18, at Villa Nazareth University College getting buried in the news. He spoke these in a rambling Q & A in front of a large audience mostly of young men and women.

Pope Francis' catastrophic remarks of June 16, 2016 - Part I of Commentary.
1. Pope Francis says that "great majority of sacramental marriages are null", but some cohabitations are real marriages.
2. How Amoris Laetitia and Mitis Iudex paved the way for Francis' statement.
3. Bergoglio welcomed his niece's defiance of Church teaching on marriage
In a short but already overheated papacy littered as no pontificate before with an avalanche of papal words, Francis' remarks during his Q & A on June 16, 2016 are surely among the worst that he has spoken. Our commentary is divided into two parts. This one is on his statements regarding sacramental marriages and cohabitation, and the antecedents for his statements in his previous teachings and actions. The second part will be about Francis' denunciation of the desire for precise doctrine and "rigidity" on divorce, remarriage and baptism.

I. What the Pope said on sacramental marriages and cohabitation.
Pope Francis said Thursday that the great majority of sacramental marriages today are not valid, because couples do not enter into them with a proper understanding of permanence and commitment.
“We live in a culture of the provisional,” the Pope said in impromptu remarks June 16. After addressing the Diocese of Rome’s pastoral congress, he held a question-and-answer session.
A layman asked about the “crisis of marriage” and how Catholics can help educate youth in love, help them learn about sacramental marriage, and help them overcome “their resistance, delusions and fears.”
The Pope answered from his own experience.
“I heard a bishop say some months ago that he met a boy that had finished his university studies, and said ‘I want to become a priest, but only for 10 years.’ It’s the culture of the provisional. And this happens everywhere, also in priestly life, in religious life,” he said.
“It’s provisional, and because of this the great majority of our sacramental marriages are null. Because they say “yes, for the rest of my life!” but they don’t know what they are saying. Because they have a different culture. They say it, they have good will, but they don’t know.”
And also this:
He added that a majority of couples attending marriage prep courses in Argentina typically cohabitated.
“They prefer to cohabitate, and this is a challenge, a task. Not to ask ‘why don’t you marry?’ No, to accompany, to wait, and to help them to mature, help fidelity to mature.”
He said that in Argentina’s northeast countryside, couples have a child and live together. They have a civil wedding when the child goes to school, and when they become grandparents they “get married religiously.”
“It’s a superstition, because marriage frightens the husband. It’s a superstition we have to overcome,” the Pope said. “I’ve seen a lot of fidelity in these cohabitations, and I am sure that this is a real marriage, they have the grace of a real marriage because of their fidelity, but there are local superstitions, etc.”
Sermon for the Fourth Sunday after Pentecost - 2016 -- Do not be afraid
by Fr. Richard G. Cipolla
"But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying: 'Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.'" (Luke 5:8)
This gospel seems
straightforward. Jesus wants to teach
the crowd from a boat, sees that Simon’s boat is empty, asks him to pull out a
little from the shore and starts speaking to the crowd. When he is done, he tells Simon Peter to
bring the boat into deeper water to get a good catch. Simon explains that they have been trying all
night long with no success. They are tired and discouraged. But Simon does as Jesus tells him and they
not only catch a lot of fish, but there are so many fish the boats almost capsize. The allegorical level so far would also seem
obvious. Peter’s boat is the Church, and
to increase the number of followers of Jesus Christ, the Church cannot stay in
the shallows but has to go out into the deep and trust in the Lord and there
will be a huge increase in the members of Christ’s body that is the
Church.
But the jarring element in
this gospel is Peter’s reaction to the amazing catch of fish. Remember that this is how he earned his
living. And this was the greatest catch
he had ever experienced. Suppose you
were a bond trader and one morning you had more trades than you have ever had
and you made a huge profit in just an hour.
What would your reaction be? Suppose you were a house painter, and one
day you received fifty phone calls asking for your services and everyone
offered you a payment for your services that was far and above what you ordinarily
receive. Suppose you were a real estate
agent, and after months of no sales, in one hour fifty homes that were your
listings all sold and at a greatly inflated price. You get the picture.
The So-Called “Poor Church”: from Vatican II to Pope Francis

Pope Francis’ documents, according to the judgment of some theologians, constitute some generic indications of a pastoral and moral nature, devoid of significant magisterial quality. This is one of the reasons such documents are discussed in a freer way than has ever happened with other pontifical texts. Among the most penetrating analyses of these texts, the study of a philosopher from the University of Perugia, Flavio Cuniberto, should be noted. His book, Lady Poverty. Pope Francis and the Refoundation of Christianity (Neri Pozza, Vicenza, 2016), is dedicated in particular to the encyclicals Evangeli Gaudium (2013) and Laudato si (2015). The study to which Professor Cuniberto subjects the texts is that of a scholar who attempts to understand the basic theses, often concealed by deliberately concise and ambiguous language. On the theme of poverty, Cuniberto, brings to light two contradictions: the first is of a theological-doctrinal nature; the second of a practical nature.

The Treaty of Rome is signed in the Hall of the Horatii and Curiatii, Palazzo dei Conservatori, Capitoline Hill, Rome (March 25, 1957) |
It is quite amusing today, but there were once not a few hard Protestant Britons who rejected what was then called the European Economic Community (the "Common Market") because they saw in it a kind of "Popish plot" -- and no wonder, since the founding document of what is now the European Union was and is the "Treaty of Rome" (signed on the Feast of the Annunciation, 1957). Not to mention its obviously Marian-inspired flag.
Anyway, we are far from the days of European leaders who were practicing Catholics and who actually went to Mass and knew their Latin quite well -- Adenauer, and Schumann, and De Gasperi... If there is a plot now, it is more on the level of increasing secularization...

All of it completely free, all of it now codified as an inalienable right, without any counterpart in terms of duties, rules and responsibilities but not even the minimum of respect and gratitude that we would expect from those who are benefiting from a generosity that has no equal in the entire world.

CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH
Letter “Iuvenescit Ecclesia” to the Bishops of the Catholic Church
Regarding the Relationship Between Hierarchical and Charismatic Gifts
in the Life and the Mission of the Church
Introduction
The gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Church in mission
1. The Church rejuvenates in the power of the Gospel and the Spirit continually renews her, builds her up, and guides her “with hierarchical and charismatic gifts”.[1] The Second Vatican Council has repeatedly highlighted the marvelous work of the Holy Spirit that sanctifies the People of God, guides it, adorns it with virtue, and enrichens it with special graces for her edification. As the Fathers love to show, the action of the divine Paraclete in the Church is multiform. John Chrysostom writes: “What gifts that work for our salvation are not given freely by the Holy Spirit? Through Him we are freed from slavery and called to liberty; we are led to adoption as children and, one might say, formed anew, after having laid down the heavy and hateful burden of our sins. Through the Holy Spirit we see assemblies of priests and we possess ranks of doctors; from this source spring forth gifts of revelation, healing graces, and all of the other charisms that adorn the Church of God”.[2] Thanks to the Church’s life itself, to the numerous Magisterial interventions, and to theological research, happily the awareness has grown of the multiform action of the Holy Spirit in the Church, thus arousing a particular attentiveness to the charismatic gifts by which at all times the People of God are enriched in order to carry out their mission.

On June 10, Archbishop Rino Fisichella of the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization announced that since the beginning of the current Jubilee, 9,100,935 pilgrims have visited the four Papal Basilicas - St Peter's, St John Lateran, S. Maria Maggiore and S. Paolo Fuori le Mura - and the Sanctuary of our Lady of Divine Love. The Jubilee of Mercy started on December 8, 2015 and will end on November 20, 2016, which means that we are already slightly more than halfway through the Jubilee year. While the summer season (peak season for tourists despite the heat) is still ahead, the Christmas, Lent, Holy Week and Easter seasons favored by numerous pilgrims have long been over.

Is the Vatican commending abortion and contraception? It’s a legitimate question after the representative of the Holy See’s intervention at the U. N.’s World Health Assembly [in Geneva] where some of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed at ensuring “healthy lives” are [normally] approved.
Now, one of the objectives included in the commendation, in particular objective 3.7 asks for: “universal access to sexual and reproductive health services.” At the Cairo Conference in 1994, the United Nations clarified what these terms meant: to provide women with the instruments of “modern contraception” and “family planning” with recourse to “safe abortion wherever it is permitted by law.”

Who is right, Francis or the Church before Francis? - "It is a very serious error to conclude that the Church's teaching is only an 'ideal'."

(1) Either John Paul II and all the Popes who came before him are right, by emphasizing the "absoluteness" of the Church's moral law and by classifying as a "very serious error" that the doctrine of the Church is only an "ideal"...
It would be a very serious error to conclude... that the Church's teaching is essentially only an "ideal" which must then be adapted, proportioned, graduated to the so-called concrete possibilities of man, according to a "balancing of the goods in question".
Sarah and Cupich: Going in different directions
While Cardinal Sarah is advocating that the Latin Rite return, as a whole (that is, including the New Mass of Paul VI), to worshiping ad orientem liturgicum, Archbishop Cupich of Chicago seems intent on reinforcing the status quo favoring ad populum -- even extending it (at least momentarily) back to sanctuaries from where it had already been banished.

Guest Op-Ed - God at the Center: Reflecting on the Sacred Liturgy

On November 26, 1969, Paul VI gave what many consider the “eulogy” for the
Traditional Latin Mass. In essence, he gave the reasons behind why he thought
the liturgy ought to be “changed.” In this remarkable address, he recognizes
that some individuals will be upset by these changes: “We shall notice that
pious persons are disturbed most, because they have their own respectable way
of hearing Mass, and they will feel shaken out of their usual thoughts and
obliged to follow those of others. Even priests may feel some annoyance in this
respect” (4). He furthermore says, after insisting that our “first obedience is
to the Council” (5), “the introduction of the vernacular will certainly be a
great sacrifice for those who know the beauty, the power, and the expressive
sacrality of Latin” (8). He admits that we “will lose a great part of that
stupendous and incomparable artistic and spiritual thing, Gregorian chant” (8).

We are going to shock you, but some provocations are beneficial and useful.
Thank God we did not obey those, who, in order to keep us within “ordinary pastoral care” (while allowing us reluctantly an occasional Traditional Mass) asked us not to be closed to the Council’s New Mass. Thank God we did not obey: we did not cave in to the “political” concern of altering the custody of the faith which is what everyone is doing now out of “a greater obedience.”

At that time, the Temple of Jerusalem had been destroyed and the people of God reduced to captivity in Babylon. So God wanted to console His people, and to give them a message of hope through the mouth of His prophet.
So Ezekiel was brought to the top of a mountain and there he had a vision… he saw the New Temple of God, and a source of water coming from the right side.

Motu Proprio "As a Loving Mother" on the removal of Bishops for negligence in cases of sexual abuse
[Text by Vatican Radio:] In a new Apostolic Letter, issued motu proprio, Pope Francis has established new norms providing for the removal of Bishops (or those equivalent to them in Canon Law) from their offices in cases where they have “through negligance, committed or omitted acts that have caused grave harm to others, either with regard to physical persons, or with regard to the community itself.”The Apostolic Letter “Come una madre amorevole” (As a Loving Mother) also clarifies that, with regard “to abuse of minors or vulnerable adults, it is sufficient that the lack of diligence be grave.”
The text was published today in L'Osservatore Romano (under the Italian title, Come una Madre Amorevole), and will enter into force on September 5, 2016.

For the first time in decades last Sunday, the Eucharistic Lord “walked” the streets of Warrington in Cheshire, England.
SSPX reaches a new milestone: 600 priests
On this feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the (almost former) seminary of Winona, in Minnesota, the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX / FSSPX) reaches a new milestone. With the priestly ordination of 7 deacons (6 Americans and one Briton), the Society will now have 600 priests.
Let us pray to the Sacred Heart of Jesus that justice be done regarding the final regularization of this majestic work of God, so that even more thousands of Catholics may benefit from it.
Sancte Pie Decime, ora pro nobis!

Reminder for the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Friday, June 3)
Pope Pius XI, in the encyclical Miserentissimus Redemptor (May 7, 1928), gave the following command:
"...we decree and command that every year on the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, -- which feast indeed on this occasion we have ordered to be raised to the degree of a double of the first class with an octave -- in all churches throughout the whole world, the same expiatory prayer or protestation as it is called, to Our most loving Savior, set forth in the same words according to the copy subjoined to this letter shall be solemnly recited, so that all our faults may be washed away with tears, and reparation may be made for the violated rights of Christ the supreme King and Our most loving Lord."
The Holy See then proposed the following formula for the act of reparation:
In praise of Low Mass
Sacrifice. Silence. Like the simple seven words on Golgotha. The essence, before our very eyes: the epitome of unplanned and truly organic development - Roman order and terseness displayed forever and everywhere.
Strengthened with all might,
Reminder: Rorate Caeli Purgatorial Society
This is our monthly reminder to please enroll Souls of the Rorate Caeli Purgatorial Society. We now stand at 74 priests saying weekly or monthly traditional Latin Masses for the Souls.
NEW! Click here to download a "fillable" PDF Mass Card to give to the loved ones of the Souls you enroll. It's free.
Priests: The Souls still need more of you saying Mass for them! Please email me to offer your services. There's nothing special involved -- all you need to do is offer a weekly or monthly TLM with the intention: "For the Souls enrolled in the Rorate Caeli Purgatorial Society." And we will always keep you completely anonymous unless you request otherwise.
How to enroll souls: please email me at athanasiuscatholic@yahoo.com and submit as follows: "Name, State, Country." If you want to enroll entire families, simply write in the email: "The Jones family, Ohio, USA". Individual names are preferred. Be greedy -- send in as many as you wish and forward this posting to friends as well.
